A so so film 4/10

Just to share my two cents. It was a so so attempt making this movie which got revealed from a found journal of Abdul. The director could add few serious characters instead of making it a fun sit-com like thing. I had been waiting for this movie from sometime but it wasn't a very good one.

Agreed. There were no surprises, as the film was more than just predictable. A blind man could see where this was going and how it would end up within the first few minutes if you're familiar with "Driving Miss Daisy".

And Dame Judi Dench played Queen Victoria Dench - again, no surprise there and no love from the Academy.

It's a mediocre movie. It's interesting what Stephen Frears is doing now, this coming just a year after Florence Foster Jenkins. Remember The Queen? High Fidelity is also a great movie and of an entirely different caliber.

reply

Agreed. I wanted to like this movie, really I did, but in spite of some good performances and luscious costumes it was ultimately... dull. There just wasn't enough story to fill out a movie.

I liked it. Sometimes a small, quiet film is a nice change. Not much happens except two very different characters - age, culture, religion, circumstance, language- formed a friendship at a time when cross-cultural friendships were rare. I like the series Victoria and the film The Young Victoria, so it was interesting to see the same woman/character at the end of her life. I have seen dramas about Victoria & Disraeli, Victoria & Lord Melbourne, Victoria & Albert; and & Abdul. Interesting pattern. I wonder why she needed to have male advisors/confidentes, or perhaps why all the dramas center on those relationships.

reply

I'm glad somebody liked it!

I wanted to, but yeah. Giving it 5/10 would be generous.

reply

It seemed like a story more suited for a PBS/BBC/Masterpiece Theatre mini-drama, not a major motion picture.

reply

Yeah, but a 1 hour drama at best. There wasnt enough material for a movie, much less a series.

reply

I only gave it 4/10 also. So overrated.

reply

I think it was an 8.....I actually liked it way more than I thought I would.....

reply

I’d give it a 7. Felt too light for cinema, but excellent for tv.
