S2E1 - Ja'loja notes

1. The meaning of the show is given by the music that was played at least twice curing the episode, which wasn't even noticed here, "As Time Goes By". (It was extra nice that this music also refers to Casablanca, where you can compare Rick and Ilsa to Ed and Kelly.) What this episode was about is that much like the 19th century sailing ships, Orville travels very long distances between ports (planets) and there is this incredible amount of downtime. What do people do to fill up all this time? Very few past shows have addressed this. Normally every show has just shown those moments of high drama and excitement, e.g. when the Borg attacked, when Q visited, etc. But there's this whole other side to the outer space experience and consistent with the show's attempt to show space life as it would actually be, this is a whole show about that. I think they deserve a lot of praise for realizing and finding a way to address this.

2.This show has been somewhat plagued by a too high male to female viewership ratio. Doing a show that mostly features relationships is a good way to get the female viewers involved as well. Everyone can enjoy the Orville, not just teenage boys. That's why this story was placed on the Sunday night premier where it was more likely to be accidentally viewed by women.

3. Intriguing how clingy the guys are on this show. Ed is clinging to his ex-wife. Gordon even clung to his stalker. Dan is already clinging to Alara. Even Cassius shows signs of being that way.

4. Obviously Mochlan kids grow up very fast. Not much time can have passed since last season since Dr. Finn's kids have not aged appreciably.

Not just the men, see as the Dr is using isaac (an android) as a surrogate father figure for her kids and it wouldn't surprise me if she 'falls in love' with him.

2. Lol wut? Reminds me of that Google has too high a male to female programmer ratio and blames it on other shit. Most women aren't into this kind of stuff as their minds are generally oriented to other 'feminine' things. Of course not every women are into those but most are. Next time go you'll complain about not enough male strippers clubs to female ratio. Also, why would Sunday be so special to just 'wahman' to 'accidentally' view this show?

reply

It's not I who feels this way; it's the TV network.

Sundays and football games (like the one that preceded the show in many time zones)tend to be family viewing opportunities that draw a more mixed audience.

I found it disturbing how Kelly "moved on," and yet is dating a guy who has an awful lot in common with Ed. He's white, has dark hair and eyes, is in a leadership position (albeit in a classroom), and his job ruined his last marriage. She may as well have gotten a clone of Ed and dated that instead. And Ed spying on her while she was on a date with the teacher was NOT okay. It was even more disturbing that the teacher was not bothered by it. He seemed way too easy-going about it. And now Ed is using the teacher as a proxy for getting back to Kelly the way Worf used Quark to indirectly woo Grilka in DS9.

Call me evil, but I really wish the amphibian guy would die. He is sooooo annoying, lame, boring, and irritating. He looks like excellent fodder for being a redshirt. Nobody would cry if he was killed on an away mission. It's no wonder he wasn't seeing anyone. Nobody could stand him, and his poetry is terrible.

That was interesting that Dr. Finn has been spending more time with Isaac. He was especially helpful in getting it through the thick skulls of those stupid parents that their kid was not an angel, and was trying to throw the blame on Dr. Finn's older son. If I was a mom, I wouldn't tolerate a disrespectful little shit like that calling me a "pain in the ass" either.

Kelly may be like a lot of people who have a type, eh? There are only 300 people on board so there's not a lot of choice.

Lots of people do semi-stalking things like that occasionally. Is it much different from looking up old lovers on social media? I think many do that.

Which guy is the amphibian? Bortus? Dan? I guess you mean Dan. He makes funny elevator comments though! Poetry is often a matter of taste. Some people like imagery and ideas that connote other ideas, but others like plain language and images. Have you ever heard of the following poem? Believe it or not it is considered a great poem in certain circles:

The Red Wheelbarrow
William Carlos Williams, 1883 - 1963
so much depends
upon

a red wheel
barrow

glazed with rain
water

beside the white
chickens.

I see a creature
his head is round
his face is ugly

I want to be kind
but he talks and talks
and says nothing

his jokes are empty
and only funny to him
he bores all around him
and clings to anybody he can
like a barnacle on a ship

he spouts useless facts
he is desperate for friendship
he overwhelms those around him
with his mediocrity

if he were to die tomorrow
people would shed polite tears
and privately rejoice in their homes

enough is said
of the crew member
that is known as Dan
