My suspicion..

.. is that McFarlane wanted to do a serious Trek type show (of which I assume he's an enormous fan), but sold the project based on the expected Family Guy/Ted type humor.

Last nights episode "Krill" had some funny moments (loved the Avis/Hertz jokes) but was otherwise a very good SciFi show in it's own right, and far better than Discovery.

They spent the money on the sets and effects, and the stories have been engaging. I can't stand McFarlane, but I'm now firmly on board this show as long as it lasts, and I hope it does.

Not a horrible theory, but considering he also has Cosmos under his belt, he wouldn't necessarily need to take the humor route to sell the idea. Not to say, of course, that's not what happened.

I am on board for the duration too, and I can't stand McFarlane either. I am not very optimistic about its chances of a long run though - it must be so expensive to produce!

It was sold as a parody or spoof to avoid lawsuits for copyright infringement. You're allowed to do a spoof of a TV show/movie like Mad magazine and SNL do. Let's face it - this is Star Trek. I don't mind the funny moments because it adds an honesty to the show like the crew gossiping about Ed's failed marriage or the navigator wanting to drink soda while working. I'm enjoying the crews' "unprofessionalism" which makes the show seem more real.
