The Transformers CGI robot designs are just TOO DETAILED

They went from the simplistic designs of the 80s cartoons to this ridiculously detailed, intricate meshing and synchronised movement between hundreds of little metal body parts rendered in as many triangles in CGI as possible to show off, without realising how IMPRACTICAL such complex machines would be. It's just ridiculous, and I think it was just ego on the part of the moviemakers to try and make as many complex and hard-to-follow CGI models as possible. I mean, in many shots, it's hard to see the faces of the Transformers!

All I can say is that I'm glad that the Oscars chose to ignore this ego over so-called "innovation" by handing the Best Visual Effects Oscar to "The Golden Compass" instead. At least that movie was a new IP, even if it never took off.

One of the many problems I find with the Michael Bay films. And Transformers is one of my favourite cartoons of all time.

Very good points.

The 1980s cartoon conveyed the transformation idea without distracting from the personalities of the robots. On the other hand, the "Bayverse" movie versions of the characters suppose and impose the idea of complexity which in my view doesn't enhance or improve on the cartoon.

That said, who knows what might be involved in alien engineering? I think the gearing mechanical concept is way more extended than the human science and involves a lot of subatomic systems that really make the Cybertron denizens total chameleons - how is it that Mirage can be both a Porsche and a dump truck without some pretty advanced abilities?
