It seems giant robot movies generally did well in southeast Asia, the first and second transformers movies both Japan and South Korea had similar box office numbers of China, even with much smaller population.

Only on the third movie (Dark of the Moon), Chinese box office numbers overtook Japan and South Korea put together, probably due to economic growth and more cinemas were built.

And I think because of that the fourth movie (Age of Extinction) particularly focusing on Chinese market, and did record numbers in China, even overtook US domestic market, started losing Japanese and South Korean audience, but still did very well.

The fifth movie (The Last Knight) no longer focusing on Chinese market, more on European culture inspirations, and not only European markets did not respond well, US domestic box office numbers were also half of the fourth movie, Japan and South Korea were the same, and even Chinese market showing signs of easing, but still did pretty well in China, probably due to the last movie, Chinese box office numbers were twice of US domestic.

I think this is the movie they say "fuck them all", and re-focusing on domestic market, and did marginally better than "The Last Knight" domestically, but failing in all international markets.

Looking at the current numbers this could be the last major transformers movie. There might be some B level spinoffs after this, but that could be it.
