Does anybody have an explanation for me? What was going on?
From what I could tell, the humans of Earth made an alliance with an alien civilization. That's what I got from it.
This movie was slow to start. But it was mind-blowing. Wow!
I believe what happened was that humans destroyed the earth (no surprise there) and so were forced to colonize Mars. But remember, hundreds, maybe thousands of years passed, so humans, now in space and on Mars, evolved to their new surroundings; thus, the man who came down the ladder was likely an evolved human who could no longer breathe the same air as the kids of 21st century Earth.
That doesn't explain the strange tentacle-like hands that were reaching down and grabbing the kids at the end, nor does any scene after explain this; so who knows, perhaps there were some aliens. The movie definitely doesn't go out of its way to ensure that we understand every plot element it presents.
I liked the movie's concept (a gravity well where time moves at a different rate), but as I replayed a lot of it in my mind afterwards I realized how poor the movie was in just about all other ways.
I think the tentacles were technolgy, similar to the ladder. Made of harder stuff that didnt break due to the time differentials. They were obviously aware of this cave by this point and had been developing ways to get to it and navigate it perhaps from the ship orbiting. Doesn't fully explain how they were pulled up into the ocean and into orbit by them. Perhaps again, technology could have put a bubble around them which we didn't see. Advanced stuff in over 10,000 years.
What didn't make sense is how the water didnt go into the cave. People passed into it no problem, so I don't understand how the barrier blocked water. The cave should have flooded.
I agree with diver's take but I also thought it was made ambiguous for a sequel. The last line was the girl saying something like 'we're really famous here'.
shareWhere did you get the aliens part from? There was nothing about anything alien. That huge triangle in space was man made and just helped accelerate space craft so they could travel fast. There was a mention of people settling down in Mars (which is probably where the 8' guy with the mask came from) and my guess is that they were being shipped off world to either Mars or another world humans had colonized.
