3 things I do not quite get?
1. That talk about how certain types of birds (robins and sparrows I think) do not mate with each other and how God never meant for the races to mix. Here is what makes no sense to me: Robins and Sparrows are BIOLOGICALLY DIFFERENT SPECIES AND IT IS NOT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO MATE WITH EACH OTHER yet humans are biologically the same species and CAN produce offspring. Charles Darwin died decades before this story takes place so they should have known that by then. Also, if God did not want the races mixing THEN WHY DID HE MAKE IT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE OFFSPRING. It could be argued that God did not intend for humans and chimps to mate BUT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO PRODUCE OFFSPRING so that would make sense, but what that racist cop said made no sense at all.
2. How did they get away with returning to Virginia and living "off the grid" as they did for a few years, especially after drawing attention to themselves. Weren't they on some kind of parole with condition of not returning to the state? How did they avoid getting re arrested?
3. Shouldn't they have been paid some kind of restitution by the state for all the hell they had been put through? I think they should have gotten maybe half a million dollars or something. They were not paid any restitution. In most states there is some kind of restitution for false imprisonment and even though they did not spend much time in jail the disruptions to their lives should have warranted some kind of compensation.
4. How did they get jobs so easily if they were convicted FELONS? As unjust as those laws were they were technically convicted felons and did they not do background checks back then? Also, were their criminal records cleared after the ruling? Because I think convicted felons cannot vote and losing the right to participate in democracy for getting married and having a family feels a tad unfair to me?
