I'm not really enjoying the retcon (spoilers)

... that Vecna is the one who shaped the appearance of the Upside Down, controls the creatures who live there, and has been inexplicably operating behind-the-scenes the entire time.

If there had been some kind of foreshadowing to Vecna's existence at the beginning of the show, I think that would have made it more palatable. But having the Demogorgon be revealed as a footsoldier of the Mind Flayer, who is then revealed as merely a creation of Vecna, feels like a series of diminishing returns. It reminds me of 'Lost', which was clearly being written from season to season, without a long-term roadmap.

There was also a simplicity and mystery to the Upside Down and the Demogorgon in Season 1. Vecna's Upside Down is just way too packed with backstory, clocks, bats, tendrils and his personal vendetta against 11.

Not to mention Vecna is a complete carbon copy of Freddy Krueger and not even an original idea. They ruined the show. I don't even care about season 5 anymore. The show leaked after season 2. I'll pretend that three onward don't exist.

Season 1 was a lot like 'The Killing' or 'Twin Peaks' (a small town crime, people dealing with grief, escalating weirdness). But, by Season 4, the series reminded me of Joss Whedon's 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' more than anything.

And that's bad? I liked Buffy back in the day, still do. Wherever they take us we're just in it for the ride. Each Season is different take you've already listed. I don't mind it as I still enjoy it. I guess it does take the mystery and demeanor of the man behind the scenes since it does seem more a slasher film more than anything now with the whole searching for your darkest memories/dreams.

It fits for me. My guess is that in the first seasons everything was more low key since Vecna was still developing his power.
