Was there any reason we needed to see Chuck make an omelette?

one of the many film references in the show

I guess it’s just pure homage….but that scene seemed to have a point in that movie that really didn’t have relevance to what was going on in Billions.

Billions walks a very fine line of being great & entertaining and also being utter teeth clawingly clunky.

Without knowing of Big Night, the scene meant knothing to me and seemed off.

They'll occasionally throw in references that there's no way the character speaking the lines would know of and it's done just to seem smart.

Sometimes it works, other times it's awful. I'm on board with it as part of a show I like generally.

The scene is taken frame by frame from the movie Big Night. The blocking and the implicit narrative are identical.

To me, Big Night is a wonderful small gem of a movie. I think Billions is a narcissistic crock of shit that is too impressed with itself.

reply

And yet you're watching it?

reply

I watch it because I want to fuck Maggie Siff. A man will eat a mile of shit to get to an ass that he wants.

reply

Absolutely the best scene ever from this show. Notice how everything about the way it was filmed was different? The POV, the pace, the action? This was a scene that brought us into the ‘real’ world of characters… huge deals and meaning-laden conversations… getting a little high… daughter walks in and it becomes this amicable and familiar moment.
We’ll done to the director, writer and producers for trying something different.

reply

I’m curious about how stealing a scene cinematically verbatim from an independent film is “trying something different”? All the writers had to write was “steal final scene from Big Night here.”

And Kel does not reply. Quell surprise.
