Two things about the movie that left me wondering...

First of all why was the family targeted by evil? They were not bad people. Did they deserve that? No. They got kicked out at the beginning of the compound for unknown reasons but it didn't seem like they did anything wrong. Maybe just a disagreement of some kind.

And the second thing is just how subtle and barely there the evil appeared. Apart from the baby being taken and seeing the witch the haunting of the family was incredibly subtle. The brother and siblings appeared to die of ailments (to those unaware) and "the devil" barely seemed present.

They get kicked out for some sort of religious differences, always seemed to me that they may have somehow been overzealous. And the witch targeted them because they were there, they moved nearby her.

I think the subtlety actually works in the story's favor. Shows how back then, a few things went wrong and your imagination and paranoia ran away with you, and you'd easily believe things were caused by witches, hence the trials.

Diddo!

They leave thinking they're better, more righteous, but we learn one by one that they're not so good after all. It's a folktale, about what happens when you think your shit doesn't stink.
