Recast Costner? Why not?

If he wants out, he'll go. But if it was my call, I'd investigate recasting the role - it won't be the first time a main character has been recast with a different actor. Hell, if die hard fans can accept the recast of James Bond so many times then replacing Costner should be easier.

I think the actor they have been using as young John Dutton in the flashback scenes would be fine as far as I'm concerned.

After months of speculation, Matthew McConaughey has finally been confirmed for his own Yellowstone spinoff series. According to Paramount Media Networks head Chris McCarthy, the McConaughey-led extension will move forward regardless of whether Yellowstone star Kevin Costner returns to the main series. McCarthy shared the news in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where he also dropped that he's currently working on close to a dozen (!) projects with creator Taylor Sheridan.

I understand everything you're saying

BUT

IF they kill off John Dutton EVERYONE left has already said they would sell the ranch

I know Beth has said as much, and I believe Kaycee, Jaime doesn't matter because by season 5 he will have been disowned and if left up to Beth --- Dead

I know of No other relatives with a chance at the Ranch ---- UNLESS ---

McConaughey Shows up as a bastard son of John

Agree, but if John on his deathbed asked Beth to never sell the ranch, she would honor him. Besides, didn't he place it in some kind of land trust?

I think the out for the series is that Beth is going to turn Yellowstone into meat producers - sell the end product of cattle ranching retail as opposed to supplying the beef wholesale.

But having said that I will also say that they won't kill off John or recast him - I just threw that out there to see what others thought. Personally, I would watch the show without Costner (I think Beth, Rip, Rainwater, and Mo are the most dynamic characters), but most people probably wouldn't watch.

I'd say your right about the Meat producing end

Don't recall the land trust

AND if john were dying and asked Beth to not sell --- she'd say OK, BUT, could sell anyway she'd just be trying to make Dad Happy the only thing that really gets in the way is what to do with Rip

AND we all seem to forget about Kaycee, HE could be the one to take over upon Johns death, and he wouldn't mind that ( and his wife doesn't seem to mind it as much as she used to)

Hi everybody. Strange fan. Never seen Yellowstone. Love Costner. Only watched the two spin off series. Love both of them. I love the old world of cattle ranching. The modern condition simply doesn't interest me. Biggest problem with Wagon Train is there's not enough Wagon Training. lol Anyhow, We have a modern phobia of recasting rolls and the old world television wasn't shy about this. Nor do I think we should still be. Recast his ass and move on. Used to happen all the time. It can happen again.

Beyond the Family --- matters -- as there are at this point

I don't recall when recasting a MAIN member of the cast of a popular show has worked -- beyond 2 seasons

I don't disagree - Bewitched being an exception certainly.

So long ago I for got about them

Dick York left in 69 and Sargent went to 72

So lasted a little -- 3 years??

Lost 13 points when the change went down

I think Bewitched had run its course given the premise, but there are also other examples. Two and a Half Men went four more years after Sheen was replaced with Kutcher and was cancelled at the end of season 12 still with strong ratings.

Roseanne's show is still running without her (admittedly not a cast change), but I don't know if it's any good because I never watched any version of that show.

Back on topic - while I certainly concede replacing a main character and maintaining ratings remains a long shot, I think Yellowstone could have gotten by given the strong ensemble cast of so many unique and diverse personalities.

EDIT: admittedly, even those might not be the best analogies as they were both cast changes by subtraction.. If Kutcher had replaced Sheen as the character Charlie, would the show have worked? Maybe not, maybe probably not. Maybe the only solution would be drop the character without a recast at all.

In any case, with such a diverse and unique cast of characters, I think the show could have gone on without John at all. A spinoff if you will but otherwise the same show.

To the poster who suggested using Josh Lucas as the current-day John Dutton.....that is THE solution. Great idea, and if KC chooses not to return, they should do that in a heartbeat.
