I hate the Professor Hulk Storyline

I'll admit I have not seen Endgame yet, I have been to busy and each time I was supposed to go something came up. So I do not know how they execute this in the film.

But, IMO, the Professor Hulk storyline is the worse of the characters storylines; specifically because it removes the most interesting aspect of the characters' dynamic; the almost unlimited power coming at the cost of uncontrollable rage. This is why the character is fun in the first place.

Taking that away given him control with reduced power basically turns him into The Thing (Fantastic Four) or Beast (X-men). In fact other than color and amount of hair I do not see much difference between these 3 characters.

Hope I get to see endgame soon so i can see how it all turns out.

I liked it, but I understand why Hulk fans might not. They were trying for shockers and surprises, and yes, having Hulk work out his problems was a huge surprise! So was having his intellect be his biggest contribution to the team effort, I didnt see that one coming.

But then, I'm not a fan of The Hulk.

It makes sense that you don't mind it if you are not a fan of the character. As a fan of the character I really dislike it specifically because it removed what makes him unique.

do you agree that there is not much of a difference between Professor Hulk, The Thing, and Beast?

reply

He definitely did remind me of Beast. The Thing is kind of a different character.

It get's very boring if you demand that your favourite characters have no character development and always remain the same. Hulk in particular is a one trick pony, which is why he works better as a supporting character than as the main character.

All of the other characters have gone through changes. Cap became Nomad before becoming Cap again, before passing on the mantle to Sam. Hawkeye became Ronin. Thor became Fat Thor, which a lot of people are also complaining about. I have to admit, I was also expecting him to get back in shape for the final battle. But I realised that it was really about Cap and Iron Man, so Thor and Hulk had to be nerfed for the time being.

I can see that in the future something could happen that will unleash the Hulk again, and he will be more powerful and dangerous than ever before. I think having him professor Hulk for a while is just fine and makes him less boring.

I fully agree Hulk works better as a support character, but I would not call him a one trick pony. He is a classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde archetype. The development comes in the form of the back and forth battle between almost 2 opposing wills of the same person. Sometimes Bruce gets the upper hand and can 'aim' the Hulk and other times Hulk takes full rage and control and becomes planet breaker Hulk. That battle is the interesting part of the character.

The professor Hulk brings a perfect balance between the 2 wills and effectively removes what makes him interesting.

Fat Thor can still fight like a badass, and he can get back into shape in n GotG3.

I loved Fat Thor, BTW.

I'm not much of a fan of Hulk myself, but yeah, have to fully agree with you here. I'm hoping this was just to put him in the position of being able to wield the gauntlet, help with the time travel stuff or whatever and he'll be going back to his old self at some point. Because yeah he's definitely been nerfed, there's no unpredictability...he's much more boring this way.

^This

exactly no unpredictability and he becomes boring.

If they do bring back classic Hulk I won't really know though; unfortunately for me after I see Endgame I am done with superhero/Avengers movies for sometime. I am finding myself fatigued by it all. 22 movies in 12 years is quite a load and the genre is fatigued (at least for me). I'll still try to see Endgame at some point but I am going to be considering that the end.

I also hated Professor Hulk, along with Comic Relief Hulk from Ragnarok.

reply

I did not mind Hulk in Ragnarok as much. It seems like they nerf him down too much and yeah was more a comic relief than anything else but it was actually somewhat funny and did not turn the hulk into a boring character. Hulk in the first Avengers movie was still the best they have done with him though.
