Miscast

I would rather have Katheryn Winnick or Yvonne Strahovski in the role. Strahovski even looks alot like Brie Larson. Larson just looks bland as fck in the trailers. Speaking of trailers, they suck.
Not really exciting and certainly not what I expect of Marvel...

A lot of us are holding our collective breaths, waiting to see what happens. Never really been apprehensive about an MCU movie before but I am now. Maybe it's just us and we don't get Larson. She may knock it out of the park but we won't know till we know. And that also worries me.

reply

Meh... it seems everybody has a different actress that they'd prefer. If you got your way, we would be where we are now with lots of people saying it should be someone else, and some suggesting Brie Larson.

Winnick and Strahovski don't do it for me. My picks would be either Alison Brie or Alice Eve, but it has nothing to do with their ability in their craft and how it applies to this comic-book character. It just comes down to personal taste, and we each have our own.

reply

It has everything to do with their ability to act. I never liked Brie Larson in anything she's done.. while I liked both Winnick and Strahovski.

reply

Sounds like personal taste to me.

reply

I'd prefer Emily Blunt, Mary Elizabeth Winstead or Emma Stone, but I agree Larson looks terrible and I fear that she's in just for girl power, not because she likes the character.

Also, since she's an hysterical man-hating shrew I'm not gonna bother with this movie.

reply

She definitely needs to curb the SJW stuff. "I don't care how men feel about my movie" is not how you sell it.

The problem is all actresses have the same attitude, but half of them hide it.

reply

True. At least the smart ones shut up and take the money.

Marvel rarely gets B and C list actors for their majors roles. That's a trend I think most people should have spotted by now

Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johannson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Bradley Cooper, and Josh Brolin are all Oscar nominees

Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Chadwick Boseman, and Chris Hemsworth were all stars on the rise when they were cast

Chris Pratt and Paul Rudd are instantly recognizable from their comedy work

I'm not trying to shit on the actresses you named, they may be very talented, but I had to google them to see who they were. And when I did google them I saw they were both over 35

Brie Larson is barely 29 and already has an Oscar. I'm not saying it had to be her, because I don't like Brie Larson, but it had to be someone LIKE her. A young star who will continue to be on the A list for the next ten years that she does Marvel movies. I actually think they should cast more unknowns, as the big scenes with all the Avengers in one room can be jarring when you see all these famous people speaking all this comic book gibberish. It takes me out of the movie every time

reply

No no, we need Winnick to play Black Canary in the DCEU. They'll need Green Arrow to replace Batman until they find a replacement for Affleck's fat ass.

reply

They've already cast Jurnee Smollett-Bell as the DCEU Black Canary in the upcoming "Birds of Prey" movie. A rather baffling choice, as Vanessa Kirby (who would have been about as perfect a casting choice as possible for Black Canary) was one of the actresses that were officially in the running for the role.

Maybe Katheryn Winnick could be Sue Storm if Marvel ever makes a Fantastic Four movie. But frankly, I'm pessimistic about her chances of getting a movie superheroine role at this point. It seems like everyone is determined not to cast her in such a role (probably because they think she's too old, or maybe because they want to change certain characters instead of casting someone who fits the comic book version). I even wrote a post a while back about how they keep passing her up for multiples roles that she's more qualified to play than the actresses that were actually cast. You can read it here if you're interested:

reply

Forgot about that. Man that's stupid. I'd have cast her as Catwoman instead. They know Black Canary is not literally black right?

reply

Now that I think of it, they might make her race the origin of her name in the movie. Someone might make a wisecrack about her "singing like a black canary" or something, thus giving her her nickname. It would be dumb, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

I've been hearing some interesting leaks and rumors lately, which may shed some light on the casting process for "Birds of Prey".

Apparently, Margot Robbie's next appearance as Harley Quinn was supposed to be in "Gotham City Sirens", but she decided that she wanted to make "Birds of Prey" her next appearance instead. Barbara Gordon was supposed to be in the movie, but Robbie had her kicked off the team and replaced by Harley Quinn. Warner Brothers has apparently let her turn the movie into her personal vanity project, giving her almost full control.

According to the rumors, she chose "Birds of Prey" because she is afraid of being upstaged by other characters or actresses, and being in "Gotham City Sirens" (which would feature Poison Ivy and Catwoman) would be too much competition. Allegedly, she had a strong hand in the casting decisions for "Birds of Prey", and has insured that anyone who could upstage or distract from her doesn't get into the movie. That's possibly why Vanessa Kirby didn't get the Black Canary role despite being the obvious choice out of all of the actresses on the official shortlist; she would probably have too much of a strong screen presence and is a similar physical "type" to Margot Robbie (light blonde hair, etc), making her too much competition for Robbie's tastes.

reply

I can believe that.
