A good show until they fucked it up at the end with Green Wacko Lunacy!

I was really enjoying this until at the end they spouted that Green Wacko lunacy about people being the virus, and Ebola being the Earth's "antibodies" to eliminate us. What an absolute crock of shit!

NatGeo used to be a good channel, but now it's mostly Green Bullshit and Propaganda!

You just made that up.

Nope. It's true.

You'll have to give me a timestamp because I don't remember that. What I do remember is Ebola being called a monster repeatedly and a big speech at the end about how if we don't keep tabs on it then it will devastate the human race.

Ebola is never made out to be any sort of heroic figure, nor is there ever any humans-are-getting-what-we-deserve vibe to the show.

Actually I think it was in the after show called "Going Viral". And they did say it. Trust me, I was outraged
when I heard that green wacko shit!

Ah, well you see that's a different matter. . .

I'll take your word for it that they said it in Going Viral, which I have not watched yet.

I think it was the "Going Viral" program. I'll check and let you know where it is.

I was wrong. The Green Wacko Lunacy is at the end of the final episode "Hidden" at the 056 mark. I quote:

"The emergence of HIV, Ebola, and any number of hot agents is the natural consequence of humanity encroaching upon previously undisturbed environments. You might say the Earth's immune system has recognized the presence of it most destructive pathogen - humans. Emerging viruses continue to mutate and survive even when faced with the destruction of their natural environment. And when they return, they're stronger than they were before."

Where do I begin with such a ridiculously absurd statement like that??? First of all, as always, anything BAD that happens is always OUR FAULT. These people always have to BLAME someone for everything!

Secondly they're suggesting that the Earth is a living organism with an immune system! The Earth is NOT a living organism. It's a friggin' hunk of rock hurtling through the universe. WE are the living organism, NOT the Earth. And they called us a PATHOGEN, which means something which causes disease. We do NOT cause disease, we are the VICTIMS of disease! That is the most absurd and INSULTING part of their statement.

And of course disturbing the environment ALWAYS comes with disastrous consequences as a punishment for what we have done.

And besides, what do these lunatics suggest we do, kill ourselves to save "Mother Earth"?? And trust me, this is they way these morons think!

Like I said, this was a good (not great) series until they fucked it up by INSULTING us with this Green drivel!

I can understand why you might find that annoying, but I wouldn't get so worked up about it, especially since it was a line that apparently passed by so quickly that I didn't even catch it when I watched the show. Besides, as I said earlier, the constant theme of the show is what a monster Ebola is and how we, as humans, have to fight back against it. I didn't consider the show to be anti-human in any way.

Regarding the earth, depending on how you define the earth, it is very much alive, active geologically and giving life to billions of plants, which in turn help to sustain the life of a great many animal species. It's an ecosystem.

While I don't really consider myself an "environmentalist" in the sense that the word is often used to today, and I also get annoyed by people who take that shit too far, I do think conservation is important and human beings have certainly not always done a good job of this. Sometimes the profit motive has gotten in the way of our (the human species) responsibility to be a good conservator of the natural world. This must be acknowledged as much as the excesses of the environmental movement must be acknowledged.

What I've learned is viruses like Ebola..aren't they so virulent that when an outbreak occurs everyone in the immediate area just quarantine themselves until the virus subsides? Ebola is too good of a virus, maybe killing thousands in a decade but not millions like HIV.
Whatever we call earth, whether it be a hunk of rock or an ecosystem we have to acknowledge human's short time here, maybe 50-500 years left before a massive die-off happens. I don't think we humans can really "hurt" the earth too much because if we really tried we'd almost certainly kill ourselves and millions of creatures but the earth would just heal and repair doesn't matter if it takes 1,000 or 10,000 years it's a blip on the radar by the earth's point of view. Even a million or ten millions years is a very short time.

I have no problem with conservation or any of that stuff. I just get irritated when these idiots insult our intelligence by calling us a "virus" or a "pathogen". As far as I'm concerned, those assholes can all go fuck themselves.

And no, the Earth is not alive. It's a rock hurtling through space.
