Scene with binoculars

At one point, Michele uses binoculars to look at the neighbors assembling their nativity scene, and apparently masturbates while watching them. Why would she find this arousing? What in the world is this scene all about? Or is it just one more brick in the wall of presenting her as a sexual psychopath?

She was attracted to him, sexually aroused at the time of this scene and decided to masturbate in response to those feelings.

Throughout the movie there was an undercurrent of religious obsession. Which is unusual in French films as France, as a society, is very secular - it's not fundie dominated like the US is.

Michele's father had been a religious fanatic, making the sign of the cross on the foreheads of the neighborhood children had creeped out their parents. Are there hints Michele was sexually abused by her father as a child? Making the sign of the cross before attacking her maybe?

But it seemed like religion triggered something in her. When she says to Patrick she was excommunicated.. His wife's piety also, I think, underscored this. How the wife says after he is killed "you gave him something he needed". Maybe reverts back to Michele's relationship with her father?

Maddeningly ambiguous this film..

She was attracted to her neighbor. It happens.

She was sexually attracted to him. Had nothing to do with the nativity scene.

She was attracted by his neighbour but the nativity scene clearly also have a purpose. Otherwise, it would not be in the movie. Workbumpf analysis is pretty interesting.

Yes, I agree. Homes was hot, no question. But the religious aspect of it was definitely the real trigger point for her. Everything about that couple was enveloped in Catholicism, just like her deviant father.

She was turned on by the guy and masturbated while watching him. It's true the film could have shown him unloading groceries instead of effigies, but I think that was used to tie in with the Christmas setting, nothing else, a sort of two birds with one stone kind of thing
