Spielberg collecting a paycheck. Again.

Disappointing to see him stoop to such lows, especially after his last film. Perhaps he should just retire.

Meanwhile guys like Scorcese are still working hard, hungry and kicking it. The Irishman was fantastic.

reply

I saw Scorcese's "The Irishman", as well, Bazzz! It was well done, rather intense. I saw it on opening night, in a theatre in my general area, and it played to a packed house! Inotherwords, it sold out! It was worth going to!

I'm not happy about Spielberg's upcoming reboot/remake of the film West Side Story, either. The best way (which I'm planning on doing) is to vote with one's pocketbook and boycott spielberg's upcoming remake of the film West Side Story--inotherwords, not go to see it when it comes out at around Christmastime of 2020.

reply

I did the same with Ready Player One - I skipped it. I saw it later on a streaming service and thought it was terrible. Spielberg is wasting time on stuff like this. Perhaps he's getting lazy and should just retire.
The Spielberg situation reminds me of what happened to John Carpenter. I used to love his films but he started grinding out poorly made schlock like Escape from LA, Ghosts of Mars, etc.

Uh...as an admitted fan of the original, my question to you all is this: HOW DO YOU KNOW the film won't be a
good one until you've read the reviews and seen decent trailers???

Let' get honest for a minute. As lovely as the '61 film is, both leads were dubbed (not acceptable in today's
movie climate, and rightly so). Secondly, Natalie Wood wore DARK makeup to "pass" as a Latina. Outrageous
in today's society.

Let's get real, folks: The REAL star of "West Side Story" is its timely score (possibly the single greatest Broadway
score every conceived). And Spielberg is every bit (if not more) as great a filmmaker as Robert Wise.

Spielberg doesn't NEED the paycheck, and while he's had his share of misfires, I doubt he would've committed to
this film if he didn't feel a passion and vision for the material.

I may see it, I may not. But I'm not damning a film that hasn't been finished or released yet.

reply

I don't care what you and many (if not most) other people say or think,, [email protected]! So what if both Natalie Wood's and Richard Beymer's songs were dubbed?!? I don't give a damn if that's unacceptable according to today's standards regarding movies. It's unacceptable to YOUR standard of movies, obviously!

Frankly, I think that today's standards regarding movies has gone way the hell down, not up, and remakes of older classic films generally come out rather awful. I don't like what I've seen so far, regarding Spielberg's upcoming reboot/remake of the film version of West Side Story, and I'm well within my rights to come out and say so. Also, Natalie Wood did not wear dark make-up to pass as Latino, and many of the actors who played the Sharks had Latin-sounding surnames.

Yes, Spielberg's done a number of good films, but I don't see his remake of the film version of West Side Story shaping out to be a good one. I don't like remakes of older films, generally, and I will vote my pocketbook and boycott Spielberg's West Side Story when it hits the movie theatres at around Christmastime of 2020. Call me what you want--I don't care.

reply

This is going to be a straight up bring your balls boys film that will play to mass audiences at a theater and not on some dumb s*** app or netflix.

reply

How do YOU know that it won't eventually end up pn DVD, Blu-Ray or Netflix? Frankly, I hope it does, so I'll have even more of an excuse not to watch Spielberg's reboot/remake of the film version of West Side Story.

You can be damned sure that I will vote my pocketbook, and not go to see it when it comes into the theatres at Christmastime of 2020! I'm a devout fan of the original 1961 film version of West Side Story, and totally against remakes generally--especially of a great golden oldie-but-keeper of a classic movie such as West Side Story that won ten well-deserved Academy Awards, including Best Picture when it came out in October 1961 and hit the movie theatres back then. If I seem old-fashioned, bigoted, or narrow-minded to you and other people on here, so be it.

Not all...

Your passion is great.

Who doesn't love movies???

However, I'm a little paranoid that cinema is becoming more anti-social.

As less and less people go to theaters each year and television screens get larger and larger, it's easy to go to a APP on your "smart" device and microwave popcorn.

I think this film is going to be a complete full blown out EPIC.

At least I hope it will be...I've been waiting for decades for Spielberg to harken back to his inner childhood.

Those were great years...

reply

Thank you for understanding where I'm coming from, exithereplease. If this film is a complete blown-out epic, what will happen with the old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story, which I'm a devout fan of? I don't want to have to make the choice of either watching the old original 1961 film version of West Side Story on TV, DVD, video, or online, or not watching it at all. If people end up preferring the re-make over the original, then fans of the old, original WSS film are s*****d, aren't we? I'm not going to go further into it, because everybody on here knows where I stand!

reply

Not all of Spielberg's movies have been very good. Frankly, I think he does better at making historical films that are based on true events and/or real people.

reply

I'm a big fan of Natalie Wood and not a fan of remakes...but I'm suspending judgement on this until it's out. I think Spielberg means to do right by it..
We'll just have to wait and see..

Here is his new Maria..beautiful and quite a voice:

reply

I've heard Rachel Zegler sing. Her voice is too shrill, and she does not seem to have any control over it, plus she tends to strain and/or go flat on the higher notes. I'll also add that Rachel Ziegler's not that pretty--she's extremely emaciated, her cheeks are quite drawn and her features seem way over-emphasized. Moreover, she looks like a walking corpse, especially without make-up on. I don't give a hoot in helsinki what either you or anybody else says or thinks; I don't like what I've seen of Spielberg's upcoming reboot/remake of the original 1961 film version of West Side Story, and I will not go to see it when it hits the movie theatres at around Christmastime of 2020.

reply

I don't like Spielberg but do the halfwits calling this a "reboot" or "remake" not know that WSS is a broadway show? And that because of this, it makes no sense to rant that this could be a reboot or a remake of the 1961 film?

reply

It's still a reboot/remake regardless.

reply

You're spot-on, Bazzz! Bravo!

reply

Come off the baloney, atomicgirl.

Sure, West Side Story was originally a Broadway musical. I know that a hell of a lot better than you do. Spielberg's making his own version of the film West Side Story, and you don't call it a reboot/remake? So f**king what? I do. It'll probably very politically and socially correct, which will be rather sickening, to boot.

reply

No, you don't know more than me, because then you wouldn't be ranting like a fool that this was a reboot or remake of the movie.

It'll probably very politically and socially correct, which will be rather sickening, to boot.

You just outed yourself as a troll, because the original show and movie were both politically and socially correct. It was about the evils of racism and anti-immigrant sentiment. It doesn't get more politically or socially correct than that, so what on earth are you talking about? You hate political and social correctness and yet love a musical that was the epitome of both?

reply

I understand what West Side Story is about, and that maybe I should word it differently: Spielberg's upcoming film version of West Side Story will probably be way too contemporary and too updated for words!

reply

If Spielberg's upcoming film version of West Side Story is not a remake/reboot of the original 1961 film version, then what the hell is it?

I do not like remakes of classic films, generally.
