Why was Hanks nominated for supporting actor?

Because the story is about the interviewer . So Hanks, though he is playing Mr. Rogers, is the supporting character.

I just saw it. Can't believe Brad Pitt beat him! And you're right, Tom Hanks should have won for Best Lead actor, I don't get how they determine which lead is "supporting". And then Joaquin Phoenix wins?! Gimme a break Academy! Tom Hanks made me a believer!
