How did Luther end up in prison?

What happened?

reply

David Robey, the murderer, overheard Luther telling Corinne, the victim's mother, that he promised to find the person responsible for her son's disappearance. Robey had heard of Luther and knew that unless he did something, Luther would actually find him. So Robey framed him for some type of corruption. I don't remember if it actually went into what he was supposed to have done, but it was pretty bad. On the radio recording Luther listened to in jail, Robey states that "he put him there", admitting to framing him.

Great movie, I loved it and am hoping for a sequel. That last scene, I think, left things open for it.

That's just the thing, though. If Luther was framed, that means he was innocent. However, when Odette asks him why he did it, he says he didn't see any other way. We never get to know what it was he is supposed to have done, nor how David managed to get him sent away for it. The movie just suddenly hops from one scene, Luther is on the job investigating a murder, to the next scene, Luther is in prison. Utter rubbish.

Not at all. It was explained at the end of the previous season. . .he got arrested as a result of his (many) actions then. Won't spoil it; pretty good story.

But this was a self-contained movie, and referenced none of that. On the contrary, this movie would have us believe that Luther was framed by the antagonist - though it never says how. If Luther was guilty, it wouldn't have been much of a frame-up.

In NO WAY was this a "self-contained movie." No idea why you're claiming that. Some movies are made to be stand-alone experiences, some are (Clearly) produced for fans of the series. This is one of the latter; make of that what you will.

reply

In EVERY WAY was this a self contained movie. Unique plot is all that is required for that. It does not pick up where the series left off, as the series in no way pointed towards the plot of this movie. Being produced for the fans of the series is neither here nor there - take X-Files, for example. Most episodes are 100% self contained, as are the movies.

Repeating yourself will never make you right. Ask the actors, writers, directors, producers, and for that matter the fans. . .you will hear that this is a film that very much leans into the concept of an existing universe/storyline; makes no apologies for that, and assumes knowledge of certain plot points.

Will you ever be willing to hear and understand these basic facts? Shrug. Thing is; it doesn't really matter. Your feelings don't trump reality.

That is all.

reply

Just because it latches itself into an existing universe doesn't mean it isn't self contained. I think you're struggling with the very concept of the word. Many (if not most) TV series have self-contained episodes. What that means is you don't need to have seen previous episodes to understand the plot in any given episode. The plot in this movie had nothing to do with the plots in the TV series Luther - it was beginning a new thread. This movie could be the only thing you've ever seen with Idris Elba in it, and you'd still be able to follow the plot with as much ease as someone who watched the entire series from start to finish. And that's what makes it self-contained.

Oh, I get it: You're an idiot.

You could've opened with that, and saved a LOT of time.

Short version: you continue to babble the same errors; I'm not interested in repeating myself. Everything you just said was addressed above; go get someone who can think to explain it. Good luck to you.

What show have you been watching!? You can't frame someone for doing something they actually did. While Luther usually acts morally, he has absolutely no problem committing "crimes" if he feels it's in the service of the greater good.

reply

That depends on what review you want to believe. I just did some research and there are many opinions on why he was in jail, and whether he actually committed any crimes. I've outlined what I got from the movie and if you see it differently, you see it differently. What most people seem to be in agreement about is that there are a lot of plot holes with many things unexplained, one of which is why he was in jail. I really liked the movie anyway.
