Better choice for Belle?

Usually I think Emma is a pretty girl, however any poster or photo I've seen of this film her face looks so chiseled and homely. I'm actually disappointed they chose her to play the role, she just doesn't seem to fit. Who do you think would have been a better choice?

reply

No Hollywood starlet would really do most likely, neither would some pop star singer.

Better go to Broadway and find some young actress with musical theatre background.

That's what the role of Belle calls for.

reply

And the poor talented girls never got a chance to audition for Belle!

I feel they've could've cast someone else as Belle. Emma is a safe and too conventional choice. First and foremost, she looks too young to be Belle, due to the animated Belle looks more mature than Emma does. Secondly, they've could've found someone who has more inner beauty than Emma. I'm not citing that Emma lacks it completely, but there are other actresses who has more inner beauty than her. Emma is too goody-too shoes.

I agree to a certain extent. With Cinderella they didn't just get a stunningly pretty actress, they also had one that exuded the inner goodness that is part of Cinderella's character and with Belle she has a serenity and a grace that should be exuded by the actress playing the part.

To you, Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?

I agree with that. Lily James wasn't particularly drop dead gorgeous, but she managed to convey the sweetness that she was supposed to do. Though I personally thought they've could've found someone better to do it. The same with Belle, actually.

They should have cast an unknown who looks and sounds the role

reply

Agreed. I've ranted enough about the choice, but Emma was a too conventional choice. She looks too young for the role, as well as being too prim and proper for Belle. There are plently of beautiful actresses who has more inner beauty than her, as Rachel McAdams, Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie or even Emmy Rossum.

I think Emma Watson was a perfect choice and no one else could have done it better.

reply

Yup i agree. When the choice came out and i heard it was Emma, i immediately thought of how perfect that was.
I don't know why people complained about her being homely, Belle was supposed to be homely and compassionate with a touch of cheekiness and daredevil attitude which Emma had portrayed perfectly.

I wish they didn't just stop at the reunion dance though. Would love to see more of the characters as humans. Or at the very least let the dog run around as a last hurrah :D

reply

I also agree that Emma Watson was perfect as Belle. Hermione is pretty much Belle in an alternate universe. 😉

reply

Basically anyone would have been a better Belle. Emma can't act, and happy people are finally seeing how plain looking she is. Hopefully her appearance based 'acting' career will end after this.

I mean I am against reboots of movies that are already perfection. But for god sakes can you cast people that can actually act?

reply

I agree with you about Emma. I haven't seen this movie yet but after watching the harry potter movies, its hard to trust her acting skills.

Samantha Barks

I always imagined Natalie Portman around the Star Wars era but who knows if she can sing even?

Whenever I think of Belle or Beauty, I think of Portman's beauty back then or Catherine Zeta Jones in her Zorro days.
