There will always be a place in the world for movies like this

I have long heard of about the legend that is Sharknado, but not until now have I watched any of the films.

I'm about at the halfway point and I can say, as my thread title suggests, that there will always be a place in the world for movies like this. Sometimes stupid entertainment is the best kind for taking your mind off more serious things and putting you in a better mood.

I'll also say that, while the production values are laughable if comparing them to bigger budgeted theatrical releases, it seems The Asylum was trying a little harder here than they were in some of the other stuff I've seen.

There a many horror movies that are either campy, or are so bad they're funny. Sharknado caught public attention, but if you're interested in this sort of movie there's plenty of campy animal attack movies made by Syfy. (I quite enjoyed Lavalantula to name just one.)

But there are probably literally hundreds of campy horror b-movies spanning the last few decades. Some are deliberate, others are funny because they were intending to make a good movie and just messed it up.

I too love movies like this and have loads on DVD.

Thanks for the response. It only took three years for someone to chime in on this thread!

Admittedly my desire to watch a film like Sharknado comes along only rarely, but very occasionally it is what I'm in the mood for. Typically I want something a little higher quality in my creature features--think Lake Placid or Anaconda--but every once in a while I'm ready for the really dumb shit.

I took three years to consider my response, ha ha.

I agree with you though. Always a place for silly, fun movies.

I feel the same way about action movies. I've spent plenty of time watching shitty straight-to-video, bottom-feeder action movies that really aren't worth the time but I keep doing it anyway. Every once in a while I get surprised and find a gem amongst all the tripe.

Taking the conversation back to Sharknado, I do feel that they maybe overdid it. The joke had worn thin by the end of the series. Probably could've stopped after two or three, to be honest. I think it's popularity hurt it somewhat. Celebrities were queueing up to make cameos, and that's what a lot of the humour became. Famous people wondering in, making a few throwaway lines then getting killed.

Also, the novelty of it being such a stupid premise had worn out a bit too by the end.

I can't say I made it past the first movie. I enjoyed the first one but already felt like enough was enough. I didn't really feel a desire to keep going with the series.

Maybe one day, when the mood strikes, I will watch the second, but I highly doubt I will ever get through the entire series.

What I'd like to know is how Tara Reid ended up getting cast. There was a time when she was somebody and actually was in high-profile films that got theatrical releases.

I think she was one of the celebrities who sort of fell off the wagon. Had a lot of drug or alcohol problems, I think. Ended up getting cast in several dross horror movies. In a way, she got lucky with Sharknado. I doubt it was expected to be as popular as it was. Kept her in work for a few years.

Looking at her filmography on IMDB it appears that she has a ridiculous number of things in various states of production, so she's staying busy. But it's all obviously dumb bullshit and she clearly has gone the Eric Roberts/Tom Sizemore route of taking any paycheck that's offered and making a career of appearing in low-budget films aimed squarely at the DVD/streaming market.

I've been finding low budget movies turning up at the dollar store. And some creature Flix too, selling for $2.
