Was Mark Hamill right? Should they have written it like this?

Mark said that it would have made sense for Lukes twin, Leía, to be the one to find him using their connection as twins, not Rey.

Even though I get that, I also see it from the writers point of view, that they wanted this to be Reys hero story. She is the new ‘luke Skywalker’, the hope of the resistance.

So I actually disagree with him.

In the end they made Luke the hero by distracting Kylo Ren but threw her a ‘hero moment’ by using the force to lift boulders out of the way.

Perhaps. The trouble is that the whole story of episodes 7 and 8 is so disjointed, generally crappy and so unlike Star Wars that it’s hard to nitpick at any one thing like this.

Yes, that’s the crux of it - TFA and TLJ don’t really connect and flow together like parts of a trilogy should. Far too little of TFA is picked up on and expanded on in this film, in favour of cheap jokes, superfluous characters and subplots, and basically either ignoring or demolishing the plot threads set up in TFA.

Out of the two, TFA feels more like a SW movie to me. It follows the SW narrative structure a lot more closely.

I agree with you, TexasJack. The new stories feel weird, out-of-place, and disjointed is a great word for it. Rey is sorta the main character, but they waste time with Finn-and-Rose-go-to-Las-Vegas. The character I was most interested in was, surprise, surprise: Luke Skywalker. He was crafted to be the hero of Star Wars, and I think the arc of farm boy to Jedi hero to fallen master who needs to redeem himself is such a good one...but they didn't do that. They started up the new bunch who aren't as interesting.

I don't have a problem with Rey finding him though he is right based on TLJ it would have seemed more reasonable for Leia to feel where he was. However everything involving Luke should have been rewritten, you really understand the comment Hamill made about the character before the film was released once you see it, its like Johnson didn't understand the character.

The problem is this franchise got sold. There was two ways to make this third trilogy. End the saga by giving conclusions to the original characters and storylines. Or use the movies to launch the next generation heroes of tomorrow. Had Lucas maintained control, we certainly would have gotten the proper epilogue that most of us wanted. Like that stupid Expendables 3 movie. Is this film about the old action heroes or these new kids? You can't have both. You have to choose. You can't have a character be the hero and the mentor. It'd be like Mickey's ghost jumping in the ring and knocking out Drago to save Rocky from making Rocky 5.

I also disagree with Hamill.

I understand Luke had shut himself off from the force and only when he reconnected did he reach out to Leia and helped to heal her.

If “ just being twins “would have allowed her to find Luke then the public would have been left asking …why the hell did she wait years to do it ?

There are alot of unclear points ..hopefully some can put me in the right direction.

1.When did Luke start searching for the first Jedi temple ? before opening his Jedi school (he wanted to be more prepared as a teacher in the knowledge of the Jedis )or after his fallout with Ben and the destruction of his school?(he hoped the Jedi teachings could help him find a way to stop the First Order).

If it was for the latter reason then why does he tell Rey he is not interested in training her and coming with her to help the Resistance against the First Order?

If he didn’t want to be found or be involved with the Resistance then why did he leave the location of the temple in R2’s memory banks ?

Maybe yes, maybe no.
