Question about Loraine and Spyglass- **Major Spoilers**

Considering that Spyglass knew that Loraine was Satchel, I would think she (Loraine) would be better off if he (Spyglass) was dead. So why would she risk her life to try and save him?

reply

You know something? I never thought of that. Wonder if anyone here has.

reply

I wondered that - I just assumed that she didn't care as long as the Americans had him.

reply

As I understood it she was working secretly for the Americans whilst part of Britsh MI? and pretending to the Russians that she was thier double-agent. Which I think adds up to being more or less one of the good guys (perhaps depending on your POV). Worst case scenario is the British feel deceived but then again they were running an operation against their own Percival. Anyway, spyglass was a homely, defenceless, little family guy and as such allowed her protective side to do the best she could - which unfortunately was not enough.

A lot of this movie didn't seem to make much sense. For example, if she was working for the KGB, why did they send so many agents to try to kill her?

reply

Theres a scene in this movie where Loraine begins to ask him this very question but Spyglass cuts her off.
Lorraine: "You memorized the list"?
Spyglass: "Yes"
Lorraine: "So if you know who Satchel is, why w--"
Spyglass: "'Me knowing is why I want your help with this. I trust you".

Its easy to miss this dialogue the first viewing because you dont know yet that Lorraine is Satchel.

What Spyglass was saying is that he KNOWS everything about Lorraine and he understands shes actually a triple agent, that she is CIA and he knows that despite all this espionage she conducts, all the lies she tells, she would do the right thing and help his family.

Knowing her history, Spyglass has probably read about things Lorraine did that were the right thing, but out of her way from her missions or good things that didnt really benefit her. So he must have surmised that Lorraine had a good heart.
