Liz's Last name (Spoilers)

How did that work anyway? What was the point in making her be "Liz Allen," black, and a high schooler if they then turned around and made Michael Keaton her father? Made no sense on so many levels. Was she Liz Allen or Liz Toomes? Why not just not give her a last name to make it even more shocking, seeing as how they didn't bother to give any of the other students like Ned last names?

What it really felt like was they were hell-bent on making everyone ethnic no matter what, so just pushed forward her character even though it was literally the only one that made no sense. Yeah yeah, she was mixed, Vulture liked some of that brown sugar, whatever!

Did anyone call her "Liz Allan" in the movie? The end credits only list "Liz" with no last name.

reply

It should be Liz Toomes here because of her father

reply

I don't remember her being called Liz Allan in the movie, I only remember her being called Liz.

If she was named Liz Allan, maybe her parents were unmarried when she was born (or still) and she took her mom's name. I think I have heard of such things happening.

reply

I initially assumed that Vulture was Liz's stepdad (not because of the whole interracial marriage thing) since Vulture's name is really Adrian Toomes and Liz is presumably supposed to be "Liz Allan" (I mean, why else would you name that particular character that).

And how in the world can you claim an obviously full black girl is mixed? Why not make Zendaya the mixed girl, who actually IS mixed? Stupid-ass casting.

reply

Sigh,

The term "obviously full" makes you sound like you don't get out much. And I've seen enough of your posts to know you can think better than that.

Obama is mixed. So is Zendaya. So is Halle Berry. So is Vin Diesel. So is Lenny Kravitz. So am I.

"Obviously" is an absurd word to use. There are a LOT of us out here; you (I guarantee) can't always tell.

reply

Well, a better phrase might be "not obviously mixed." You put Barack next to Michelle and it's not hard to tell which one is mixed. And Laura looks like a young Michelle Obama. I just have a hard time believing Keaton's genes could mix with anyone and not produce someone whiter than Laura Harrier. Unless they said she was adopted. I'm still boycotting the movie so haven't seen it, LOL.

reply

Again, for the cheap seats:

You absolutely would NOT be able to tell Obama is mixed, if you weren't told so. The term "not obviously mixed" is as silly as "obviously full." Both make it seem as though you can look at someone and tell if they're mixed, or for that matter, what they're mixed With. . .which is simply Not True. Full stop.

FWIW, to my eye, Michelle doesn't look any more "Black" than Barack. I'm sure she doesn't to much of the rest of the world, either. I haven't taken a poll, though, so. . .shrug.

One thing's for sure: if we ever met, I'd bet money you wouldn't know my ethnicity. Or who my parents are, or what they look like.

All types out there, dude. It's a wonderful world.
