On YouTube - Interesting doc about Ross and his career

Just a heads-up for anyone who is interested, this is up on YouTube on the official Bob Ross channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCwGOMloBPk

I watched it last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. Just goes to show that a documentary need not be particularly flashy to be interesting, as long as the subject matter is compelling.

If you like Bob Ross then give it a look!

Also on Netflix.
I have always enjoyed this show. I was never very artistic so watching him create those fantastic landscapes was such a treat. It was like magic!
Thanks for the info.

Bear in mind this isn't the show but a 2011 documentary about Ross and the show. There does look to be some Bob Ross stuff on Netflix, but not this doc.

If you haven't seen it you should give it a look!

Thanks. I will definitely look at that tonight.

If you do, chime back in!

It's only about an hour long. As I said in the OP, the style of the doc is very simple and straightforward--perhaps you could even say old-fashioned--much like the show itself.

You should learn some interesting stuff about Ross and his life.

Thank you so much for posting! I'm glad that I happened to see this on the trending bar this afternoon. I might not have ever watched the documentary.
I just finished seeing it. I'm a bit weepy, but in a happy way because he was a very kind and sweet man. You can't feel bad when you think of all of the people who's lives he touched.... even for a half hour each day. What impressed me , aside from his talents, was the way everyone described him. It was always the same.
He really was a special man and everyone who has watched him knows it.

reply

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it!

It's an interesting look at Bob and his life. There were a few things that seemed to be glossed over--the relationship between Bob and Bill Alexander grew rather contentious, from what I understand, and this wasn't really discussed at all--but overall I thought it was really good.

Clearly Bob did touch a lot of lives. I thought the stat was interesting about how, of all the people who watched the show, only about 3% actually painted along with him. Most just watched to be in his company and watch him do his thing.

I also liked the story about how in the early days only one person showed up to one of his painting classes and everyone else was like, "We're not hanging around to teach just one person" and Bob was like, "Oh yes we are."

It's a real shame he died the way he did. Cancer at only 52 years old. He deserved better.

I was surprised that he had the forethought to think about his look on camera even in the early days..... something about keeping it simple so that it didn't look dated 30 years later. People didn't really think in those terms even in the early 80s, and certainly not a little painting show. I found that interesting. By the way, in my opinion, he doesn't look one bit dated today.

One of my favorite stories was the PBS auction. It was about the lady who bought his painting. She came to get it and cried and thanked him for making her afternoons special, or something like that. He was so sweet to her in saying, That's why I do it.

I was also interested in how they did the show. The set is perfect in dark. I wish the other painting shows would have no background in their sets. It's distracting.
I also didn't realize that he worked from a master painting. He did do some on the fly when some of those paintings were stolen.
I can't help wondering if the person who stole them still has them now.

reply

Regarding the set, I don't think I've ever watched a single episode of any other painting show, but I would've been interested in seeing how the log cabin set would've worked out. He made the black background iconic, but I wouldn't have minded something with a little more character.

As for the stolen paintings, that's a good question. I thought the mention of Bob Ross originals was interesting. When they said an original can go for $10,000 I'm not sure if I was surprised or not. In fact, on one hand, I'm surprised an original isn't more, considering how well-known Bob was and still is. On the other, I'm surprised it's not less considering that, even by Bob's admission, he wasn't exactly creating museum-quality art.

Well, I have seen a couple of painting shows on the Create channel. One lady does nothing but florals. They are nice, but there is too much in the background. You don't get to appreciate the actual painting because there is too much on the set.

There is one other thing I meant to bring up. With the celebrities in the documentary all talking about Bob, you would think I would have remembered this. I found the story about Marlon Brando so cute! That surprised me too!
I mean, you know you have made it big time when a star like Marlon Brando watches your show! LOL!
Once again, great documentary. Thanks for bringing attention to it.

reply

Yeah, the Brando story was pretty interesting. I actually was surprised by the sheer number of celebrities that appeared, everyone from Phil Donahue to Brad Paisley to Terrence Howard.

Howard especially surprised me. It just seemed to random, and then he only appeared in a single interview clip.

I wasn't really surprised to see the celebrities. Bob Ross really had a following in the 80s, so I'm not surprised by any of his fans.
By the way, as a daily Donahue viewer back in the day, I remember the Bob Ross episode.

reply

Hey! Thanks a lot my man!!! Info is scarce on the guy and I've followed him since back in the 80s...will be sure to give it a watch and let you know what i thought 👍 again...thanks😄

reply

Cool, glad a few people here are actually interested in this and I did not post in vain!

Once you have a chance to watch it chime in and add your thoughts to the thread.

reply

DEFINATELY! Right now there is a huge bob Ross and Fred Rogers resurgence...two fine fellows👍

reply

Poor guy had to perm his hair and didn't like it, but that is what the audience was used to...lol

reply

Ha, yeah, it's kind of funny. But hey, small price to pay for success.

reply

Thx for the heads up Prime
My family loved Ross
He was quite the fella apparently
I will seek out the doc

reply

Cool, let us know if you watch it!

It's only 67 minutes so you should be able to knock it out pretty quickly.

reply
