Philip's real estate going out of business

While it was an interesting sub-plot, it did not add much to the show. They had ran and expanded the business for almost 20 years, so if they needed an influx of cash from the Soviets to keep them in their home and to allow Paige and Elizabeth to keep working, that would have been a drop in a very large bucket.

I thought it was good for Philip to see the other side of capitalism, since he had mostly experienced the successful parts.

Good point!

Actually, they ran the business, but didn't expand it. It was successful enough to yield profit and give cover for all the travel, yet not too successful to make them visible and so they'll have enough free time.

A huge focus of the last season was Philip's (misguided) expansion of the business, and it failing. True, it provided a great cover for 15+ years beforehand.

reply

Yes, but it was explained that the failure was due to wrong timing, because of an economic crisis that ensued. Anyways, the reason they had the business fail in the show was to give Philip a reason to go back to spying and, also, to have both worlds crash - the agency and spying, to force Phil and Liz back together.

Fair enough.
