Comparison to Albert Finney in 1970

They've been calling this a remake of Albert Finney's version. I just watched it. They used two songs from that version. Other than that the story has been completely rewired.

How many songs in total? I hate musicals but I can deal with it if it's only 2.

reply

Didn’t count, but I would around seven songs.

reply

Oh man, that's too many.

reply

Same. Outside of animated films, I don’t watch musicals.

I started Hamilton with my daughter. She watched it in school and wanted to share with me. Even knowing it was a musical I agreed. Really interesting take. Man, the whole thing is song. Every scene and piece of dialogue. I thought musicals only had songs sprinkled in.

There are maybe 5 musicals I really like. I find it such a niche genre.

What they should have done was make him look a bit more older and scraggy just like Finney was in his version. This Scrooge was just too clean cut for my liking, but it still wasn't too bad a film I suppose.

It was altogether kind of a weird version.

The 3D animation didn't seem to fit the story, nor did all the glitzy, bright colors and effects. Plus, there was a lot weird forced diversity, such as Fred inexplicably being married to an Indian lady and having a father-in-law who looks like the maharajah. The story takes place in Victorian London and all of the above just felt inappropriate and out of place.

And while it does broadly follow the plot of Dickens' book, there are TONS of details that have been changed or added in. Don't get me wrong, I am not against making some changes to give the story some freshness and distinguish it from other versions--the '51 version with Sim does this remarkably well and is probably the best version ever made--but some of these were not good changes. For instance, why does Scrooge have a dog? That feels out of character for him. He's not going to take the time to look after the welfare of an animal nor would he desire the companionship.

Overall the best I can say about it is that it's an "interesting" watch. However, there are a lot of bad decisions here and it's not an adaptation that I will ever visit again.
