things i didn't get

all in all great show, but some moments caused frowns:

1.) clay acting like a bully by taking a naked picture of tyler and sending it around.

2.) when tony asked clay if he has ever seen a dead body / crime scene, clay said something like "only on funerals or on television". later on it was revealed that clay was the first one on the scene after the car accident had happened. so he did in fact have seen a dead body / crime scene (sort of) before.

3.) hannah in the hot tub. she undresses to her underwear in front of her bullies and joins them in the hot tub, at the property of someone she knows as a rapist. seriously?

reply

1) Yes, it was bullying, but I think Clay saw it as justice/retribution. He was giving Tyler "a taste of his own medicine".

2) Clay either lied because he is not ready to deal with Jeff's death and/or it suits the plot better as we do not yet know about Jeff's death.

3) She made a bad decision. She is already pretty broken and she is giving fitting in one last chance. Yes, she stripped down to her underwear and got into the tub with a group of people who were questionable when it comes to determining whether they were her friends (I'm pretty sure I actually hated some of my HS friends). However, her underwear covered more than many bathing suits. Would you be questioning if she had had a bathing suit on?

reply

"...questionable when it comes to determining whether they were her friends"

those guys were her previous "reasons" who have all been hurting her deeply. i can't really see her jumping into a hot tub with the likes of zach and justin after what they did to her.

reply

She was wandering around the neighborhood almost in a daze. I agree that this part didn't make the most sense, but I think the writers wanted to convey the idea that she was already semi-suicidal and she wasn't really thinking about her personal welfare or safety. Abuse victims often stay in the same household as their abusers, it's not the biggest stretch to imagine a girl with no friends going to one of the only places where she knew people.

reply

She admitted she knew it was a bad idea, but that isn't always enough to stop a high school kid, especially when they are troubled and looking for acceptance. I don't think Zach was a problem for her anymore, that stuff happened the previous school year. Justin and Jessica were more complicated, she felt guilty for Jessica and she blamed herself as much as she blamed Justin. She definitely didn't like Justin, but probably wanted to be friends with Jessica again.

That episode also shows she didn't really see them as reasons until afterward when she got home and started writing down their names and making the tapes.

#1 this is to illustrate how he changed over the course of the story. One of the messages the show tries to get across by the end is to generally not be shitty to others, things that seem little to you could turn out to be a big deal to them. So he starts doing things he believes are helpful, like giving her parents the poem she wrote, going to see Jeff's parents, etc.

Although sometimes what you believe to be helpful may not have the intended effect. Tony thought he was helping Hannah not get smeared again by keeping the tapes secret to everyone not on the list, but by the end, he realized her parents needed to know about them to get closure and possibly prevent it from happening to someone else in the future.

reply

1.) Clay thought he was somehow paying Tyler back for What he did to Hannah.

2.) You're exactly right about this one. But I guess Clay just wasn't willing to tell Tony about that. I don't exactly know how he pulled it off but apparently no one knew he was the first to the scene.

3.) Yes this doesn't make sense at all. It's almost like she forgot what she knew about Bryce. Why would she even go to his party? Let alone undress and get in a hot tub. If it had been a party at someone else's house and Bryce happened to be there it would make more sense. Not victim blaming but she really shouldn't have ever put herself in that situation.

reply

I can honestly say she is partially at fault for being raped. It is not like she was ignorant to his nature, she witnessed him rape her friend AND he sexually harassed her in the liquor store. Screw victim blaming, she was responsible for what happen to her as far as putting herself in a position to get raped. When she realized he was in the tub, does she immediately get out? No! she engages in conversation by herself in her underwear, not under the influence of alcohol were her decisions might be off. Bryce was one of the first person that greeted her upon arrival. She didn't even halfway seem cautious to his presence. It is like a person who is blond visiting the home of a serial killer who kills blonde woman, and the person witnessed him doing it, and then is surprised when the killer tries to......murder her. No excuses. Then to add insult to injury she puts up a half-assed struggle and doesn't bother to scream to get attention, a thing she previously had no issue doing.

reply

Considering it was an outdoor party with many people (witnesses) she probably thought she was safe. Also Bryce doesn't know that Hannah saw what she saw so I think she didn't want to make it too obvious. But like others have she was on a very low point.

Yes it was stupid and dumb of her but isn't that how most teenagers are.

And how the hell can a rape victim be at fault in anyway.

reply

Considering that Bryce is a rapist, no female is safe in his presence. Stop trying to make excuses for her poor actions. How do you even have the gull to type such inexcusable bs.YES, Hannah is very much at fault. SHE IS A RAPE VICTIM, and guess what? SHE IS PARTIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENED. You can spin it anyway you want, it will never absolve her of being partially responsible. Didn't want to make it obvious? If he was ignorant to her presence when it happened, what would be obvious? Since when should people be considerate about a rapist feelings? You contradict yourself. And fuck what other people say, now she is a an even lower point because her appallingly stupid behavior.

reply

You sound like the people who would blame women for being raped for dressing inappropriately. Most teenage do stupid things but they need people to help them. Hopefully none of them ask you for advice.

reply

And you sound like a person who has no common sense and instead of instilling and expecting teenagers to use their brains, you make excuses. Even other teenagers were taken aback by her decision to party with a rapist. Be stupid all you want and I pray you don't have children. If god forbid you do, remember my words when one of your unfortunate offspring runs to you after doing something stupid like this.

reply

hahahaha stop it your too funny.

reply

I'll take being funny than being stupid. From what you have shown me, I assume you chose the latter.

reply

Thanks for your opinion, not sure how I'm going to move forward with my life now. Eddym123 just called me stupid, man, the depression.

reply

"Thans for your opinion, not sure how I'm going to move forward with my life now."
An easy target!
