[Spoilers] Just saw this last night and have a question. Haters need not apply.

Near the end when they are in the F-14 in the final confrontation with the nose fighter in the steep climb after Rooster could not eject due to the malfunction with the eject handles, just before the missile lock....Maverick is apologizing to Goose because he is aware that he may be the cause of his sons death too....Maverick had a knife just down and left of the screen....what was Maverick going to do with the knife before Hangman saved them both?

I watched the scene twice and I not sure what I'm missing there, anyone have an idea?

It wasn't a knife, it was the end of a belt.

It's not a knife, it's the end of a seatbelt

It's floating up into view because they're filming in an actual jet experiencing actual G-forces

I think it's a mistake - I'd guess actual pilots make sure everything's "bolted down" before take-off. Cruise may have forgotten to secure that seatbelt "tail" during this one shot.

But they kept it in because it reminds the audience that they did, in fact, film these scenes in actual jets in actual flight.

I went back to view it again and everyone is right, it certainly is the seatbelt end.

So I guess the other half of my question was that he was apologizing to Goose because he would be responsible for his sons death too?

Overall I really enjoyed the movie. Seems to be a mixed reaction...but I grew up on the first....that they did a good job with the movie and content of 30 years passing.

Yes, no doubt in my mind. That's the real reason why he tried to keep Rooster out of flight school and "set his career back by years"

Yes, I think that makes perfect sense. I found it compelling when he explained that to Penny, that Rooster should hate on him only and not putting the mother in a negative light for whom he promised to help protect her son, or at least that is what I got out of it.

And as he stated in the film, Rooster's mother asked him to keep him our of the air.
