No...they don't care about the original story line. It was always Rick and Carl's story. The writers spit in the fan's faces when they killed off Carl and then Rick left.

That being said, they killed off Carl because Chandler Riggs tried to negotiate a much higher salary after he turned eighteen when his minor contract became null and void. The producers were unwilling to pay that.
But they would pay an incompetent asshole like Gimpel to continue on as producer?
