Why is it so hard to "properly" adapt the Fantastic Four?

Not just this movie, but the two mediocre at best Tim Story directed movies prior to that:

The abysmal first season of the animated series from the '90s that aired on The Marvel Action Hour alongside Iron Man:

The "ashcan copy" live-action movie from Roger Corman:

The 1978 animated series with HERBIE the robot replacing the Human Torch:

That bizarre Hanna-Barbara produced cartoon from the '70s where a teenage Ben Grimm magically turns into the Thing by clasping two rings together:

Because, INNATELY, the Fantastic Four SUCK anyway? I think they're the worst superhero family I've EVER seen.

Heck, the Incredibles did the F4 CORRECTLY, if you ask me. And you should.

I think one big problem with the concept of the Fantastic Four that with other Marvel heroes like Spider-Man and the X-Men, society doesn't out and out trust them regardless of their good intentions.

Tonal imbalance. They can't get the tone right and they're not really trying to. I think that's reflected in the writing and the repeated miscasting of the characters. Raimi didn't know what he was doing when he made Spider-Man, but he tried and it shows because he got the tone of the story right.

It only takes the right writer/director team. There are MANY excellent FF stories. Most of them are too big and/or cosmic to be adapted to a single movie. But not all. Both of The Incredibles are great Fantastic Four movies. Hollywood has trouble knowing talent when it comes to writing.

and...why can't they do Dr. Doom right?
