I think it is to set up a sequel, if this movie did well.

I know it's for sequel, I'm wondering how the story will explain him.

Is he spy too? So Bryce Dallas Howard use his image to write the novel?

I'd say past boyfriend, because there was a hint of desire in those imaginations. There must be a reason she refused to take on relationships.

And of course there would be a twist, in that twist he might be a spy.

No reason. Just them thinking "nerd ugly Cavill" will make people laugh. For some reason.
It was cringe and I was embarrassed for everyone involved.

Based on what we'd seen prior, it was someone from her past that she was into at some point. I'm guessing a first crush, high school boyfriend or something. He read the descriptions in her books, and came to realize the protagonist was based on him. He was there to get his recognition and set up the character for the next movie that will never happen.
