something that gets me about the private/separate bathrooms

We know it's about racism, but it's under the guise of worry about germs. Yet Aibileen's bathroom clearly has no soap or sink for with to WASH HER HANDS AFTER.

racism isn't about logic or reason. Hate is irrational.

If I had employees in my house all the time, they would have their own designated bathroom, even if they were white. Both I and they would feel more comfortable that way.

It is clear that it wasn't about germs, because the maids cooked the family's food and raised their children.
But it was about keeping black people and white people apart.
As soon as everybody can use the same bathroom, they will be equals.
And a lot of people in the 1960s weren't ready for that.

Elizabeth Mobley's husband does tell her that separate bathrooms are not economically sound. He would rather spend the money on something else. But he doesn't protest too much because he wants his wife to 'feel good'. So there is some pushback.
