Would a Nine-Year-Old Enjoy This?

Just before we settled to watch the new Spider-Man film at the cinema on Saturday afternoon, my 9-year-old nephew, out-of-the-blue, said he wanted to see Asteroid City. I was surprised, because there were no trailers for the film, and my nephew has hitherto displayed little interest in 'art-house' films; just the occasional animated kids movie, superhero film, or Ghostbusters.

If he's serious, I'm delighted, because I'd like to see this myself, as a fan of Wes Anderson's ouevre. But I do wonder if a hyperactive 9-year-old who'se generally hooked to watching YouTube videos about Roblox would have the patience to enjoy this.

What do you suggest?

It’s a movie about loss and grief disguised as a sci fi. As a widower I was flattened by this

I know a 10-year-old girl who plays Roblox all the time. She mostly builds houses, but lately she has played Sheriff vs Murderer, where two people shoot at each other in a building.

She has mostly watched children's movies. But this spring she asked to see
'M3GAN', about a murderous little girl-shaped robot doll. It played on Peacock for free. She said it was the best movie she had ever seen. I don't think she had ever seen a horror movie.

My answer is NO. I was bored as hell and fell asleep a few times during the film. If he saw it, and liked it, I'd love to know. He would get a glimpse of a full frontal nude Scarlett, or possibly her stand-in. Also, he'll see two men kissing. If you don't want him seeing either of these, you may want to steer him away.

I'm way late to this, but I'd guess it sounds like a sci-fi pic to a 9-year-old.

reply

I cannot imagine a 9 year old enjoying this movie, but I could be wrong.

reply

Probably not. There's nothing really inappropriate, but there are references to 1950s movies and tv, and adult ideas that most nine-year-olds wouldn't get.

reply

Someone with the immaturity and undeveloped mentality of a nine-year-old probably wouldn't be sophisticated enough to enjoy it.
