The irony of the main character saying he couldn't stand his roommate for voting for Goldwater....

John Ford (the director he meets at the end) voted for Goldwater lol.

John Ford wasn't his roommate, and Spielberg would have no way of knowing who Goldwater voted for in the five minutes he spent in his office.

He knows now and still filmed the scene, genius.

It was a weak attempt at humor. I was surprised how much this movie avoided laughs.

Agreed, the movie is enjoyable at most parts, but there are two things it failed to do: make us laugh and evoke sadness.

It's not ironic. It's not even a coincidence. It's really just nothing.

It's irony if Ford was well-known as Goldwater supporter and maybe even broadcasts in his favor.
