David Lynch cameo was the best part

Agreed. Lynch was great. It was a weird but inspired bit of casting by Spielberg. Lynch didn’t want to do it but was eventually persuaded by what a good person he found Spielberg to be. I love that those two collaborated on a film, both flat out geniuses.

The Fabelmans as a whole was a mixed bag though. The infidelity stuff was very effective in how sad and disturbing it felt. The main actor is excellent.

But the film didn’t really cohere into any kind of story. It was more like a series of snapshots. It’s interesting to see Spielberg do something this personal, but I’d rather see a film about his filming techniques and why they’re so effective.

I’m glad Spielberg got this interesting little autobiographical film out of his system, but I’d rather he went back to making his awesome popcorn movies, that’s where he excels.
