At what point would you leave John? Spoiler

I understand Pam has her job to do, but this guy doesn't make it easy does he. There were, I swear 4 or 5 times where I would have just left him to his own devices.
Then he drives off after they reach the carpark? It's impossible to care about this character.
I know it's a true story but I wonder if the real guy was this impossible to care about or if this was for narrative reason.

I would have left him on top, when he looked fucked up and almost dead. He wanted to be there, why make him unhappy?
But I am not a rescue ranger.

If my mission was to save people, then I would have done what she did.
