The central problem with the show...

Why should we root for Boba Fett to take over the underworld of Tattooine? Why would his being capo de tutti capo make any difference to anyone except him? What has he ever done to show he'd rule well, that the people he will squeeze for protection money will be better off for his takeover? Wouldnt they be just as badly off under the Hutts or some other thug, with the only difference to them being how many bystanders are killed in the struggle to be king of the dunghill that is Tattooine?

Seriously, the writers seem to assume that we will root for him because we know him from other material, but we don't actually know him. And the only decent thing we've ever seen him do was give a Mandalorian a ride when he wanted to save a kidnapped Child.

Cuz he has cool armour.

reply

So did the Mandalorian.

reply

Lack of Adventure.
Replaced with politics / power struggle.

I still like it OK, but it's no 'The Mandalorian'.

"The Falcon and the Snowman" did similar things better, and it's still my least favorite of the Marvel Disney streaming shows.

I don't know that this show is going to work for me. Maybe I'll watch a few more episodes, but if I can't sympathize with the main character's main goal...

I don't know that we should root for Fett. He's clearly the focus of the show. And the antagonists so far don't seem preferable to him.

We know he's a guy who crawled out the belly of a monster. Almost died. Been symbolically reborn. And now he wants to take over as the Mr Big. We are gradually being given revelations that tell us why this is the case.

You could say the same about The Godfather. Why should we "root" for the title character in that film?

reply

Ah, the "Godfather" films, which are my #1 example of great films that just don't work for me! I just don't go for underworld movies, the only movies about criminals I like are clever caper films.

Oh well, will you guys let me know if they ever throw in something fun like a clever caper?

reply

But you are aware that movies like The Godfather are extremely successful both commercially and critically. People "go for" them. And you can understand that someone might take inspiration from those kinds of movies.

reply

Oh, I'm very aware that the "Godfather Saga" has been on the top of the AFI Best Films list for ages and ages, and that a lot of people adore the films! And while I don't love the films, I can appreciate how well-made and complex they are, they just don't work for me on any sort of personal level. I don't like any of the characters, I don't share a single one of their aspirations, I don't identify with any of them and so on and so forth.

So I don't like gangster films as a genre, because my issues with the "Godfather" movies extend to the whole genre, and here's a Star Wars series that's essentially a gangster show. Okay, fine, lots of people like gangster movies and I hope the people who like both Star Wars and mob dramas like this show. But what I'm seeing in this show is a gangster drama... that isn't nearly as well-made as the "Godfather" flicks.

Nobody claimed it was anywhere near as well made as the Godfather films. Your OP was about doubting the wisdom of showcasing a character whose ambition is to become a powerful crime lord on Tatooine. Giving the audience nobody, as you said, they should be able to "root for". I've cited just one film from a large and popular genre that shows that the producers were wise in at least that way to set a drama series in the criminal underworld (of a fairy tale, space adventure universe to be exact). I didn't realise you were questioning the wisdom to make a show in a genre that does not work for you, personally. And the neglect to make it well enough for you to recognise it but still not like it.

Let me know if LFL ever get back to you personally with an explanation.
