Can I ask why this would be some sort of priority or priority at all if a sudden war broke out down on the ground? What would “having control” of the spacestation even mean? This premise seems absolutely silly.
shareWhoever has control of the space station has control over the phaser banks and photon torpedoes, not to mention the transporter. It could be of great strategic importance.

shareHe said that in jest. He was making a Star trek reference. If I.S.S. had any type of strategic value in a conflict those orders make sense. However, I don't think, and highly doubt, it does in reality. It's a research facility. Having said that, in the movie, however, a radiation poisoning cure was being developed onboard the I.S.S., so there's your strategic value. He who controls the cure, controls who gets cured. A character states something to that effect in the movie. That's a bit tenuous, granted, but perhaps it suffices.

sharerussians would totally do. It was typical behavior of them. One order and that guy is killing his colleagues. What's surprising and unrealistic was that russian woman was all turning on good side and selflessly trying to save that West Side Story actress she knew for 1 day. LOL. Would never happen. Russian woman-astronaut would do the same as her male colleagues. No way she would commit mutiny against her own to save Americans.
There was a reference to why the space station was so important, it went by quickly. One of the research projects on board was related to radioactive materials and would be crucial in treatment of illnesses or injuries caused by the radioactive fallout of the nukes going off down below.
