There’s even one set in a pool: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5143226/reference

They should connect them all together into a shared universe and do an Avengers type movie with all the various survivors

I would put Alien in this genre.

I just thought that the original Night of the Living Dead is one as well. They are stranded in the house.

I'm sure there were earlier films of this genre, but the biggest box office inspiration has got to be "Open Water."

The OP is actually describing "Open Water 2" (where they can't get back on their boat), which had been in development hell UNTIL "Open Water" kicked open the door.

"12 Feet Deep" mentioned below is in the same category, as is Ryan Reynolds's "Buried."

I would NOT however place "Alien" or "Night of the Living Dead" in this genre. The central plot device is being trapped by the setting itself, not being cornered by a hostile force.

As for tying them all together into a shared universe, I can't help thinking about "Cabin in the Woods," which sort of does that with the entire horror film genre.

These comments I made are 4 years old, but I think I was referring to the wolves when I brought up both of those movies

Ah, then in that case, the comparisons work for me, too

But I still think the defining trait of the genre is more "trapped by circumstance" than "man vs. monster"
