Woke check

Let's see

Black=good
Blacks are presented as a model minority. The competent and ethical professionals are all black except for a woman who was Asian.
Black characters have a level of awareness and a moral compass which none of the white characters were capable of. They are flawless. Every single black character turned out to be good even as we got to take a closer look into their minds and personalities. Even the prisoner who bludgeoned Dahmer to death and the girl who destroyed the camera which belonged to white youngsters, were nothing but highly relatable vigilantes. Black violence is justified.
CHECK

LGBT=good
This was a tough task since the main villain was gay, but LGBT and the gay scene was otherwise given a very positive portrayal.
But Netflix messed up by putting in the LGBT tag on a series about a necrophiliac, cannibalistic serial killer.
That's a big minus point.
CHECK, sort of

Ableism=bad
The series dedicated a whole episode to deaf people.
Deaf people are normal people with same kind of interests and humor as us, deal with it.
CHECK

White=bad
White professionals are racist, incompetent & immoral.
Dahmer chose a black district because he wanted to take advantage of his white privilege and systemic racism.
Good white people do exist, but they are also flawed.
CHECK

Support black-owned businesses!
Multiple directors and writers involved in making this series are black or POC.
CHECK

Overall it's a woke APPROVED series, for now.
It is exploitative, black victims are being exploited, something which it accuses other publications of doing, but it tries to offset it by otherwise being pro-black.
They have achieved that, for now, but it might be brought down by the black power of the Lindsey family.

Wokeness is the future, embrace it whitey!

reply

Great post. Wokeness is definitely killing art, and our history.

reply

Now I know to avoid it. Thank you.

reply

I would not go that far. It's a seriously good show, even with a few woke elements. It's not a "Coming 2 America" or a "Bill & Ted" situation.

reply

So what amount of this racism is acceptable to you then? Is there a way to measure it film to film so that we might be in a situation to judge for ourselves? 'It scores 20% on the woke scale, just a little higher than I allow.'

Woke-ism is like liquid feces, films are a punch bowl filled with punch. Once woke-ism is introduced in any amount to the drink it's difficult for me to pretend like it doesn't stink.

reply

Yes, as the OP I agree that it's still enjoyable.

It also depends on what sort of wokeness bothers you, and how much.
If you're bothered by feminism and gender, then this show will not bother you because it doesn't really get into that, although the two most redeemable characters in it are women(Glenda, Shari).

It goes full woke on race.

reply

Thanks. I'm not going to watch though.

The wokeness bothered me most in respect to the Glenda character whose entire purpose was made up to show that the police and other authority figures were evil. She wasn't even based on a single person. Even in the series, we spend a great majority of the second half of the show seeing how she was victimized. There was a single incident that demonstrated police incompetence that she witnessed yet we're led to believe that her character suffered for months because she couldn't go to the police despite overwhelming evidence which no one in real life was really privy to. Moreover, by focusing on this made up character, you're ignoring the dozens of actual victims who were either killed or lost loved ones to Jeffrey Dahmer.

The episode dealing with the deaf character was melodramatic but still effective. However, it could be considered offensive in a sense that it's entire purpose is to deflect criticism that the show is exploiting its victims by humanizing Jeffrey Dahmer.

Other scenes include the police arresting Glenda's daughter for justifiably smashing that dude's camera and police officers harassing the Asian man (don't know if these incidents actually happened) a civil rights attorney schooling someone on why Jeff Dahmer's crimes are meaningful for the black community, a mother omitting the fact that her son is gay when filing a missing person's report, and a militant cop who tries to get Dahmer to admit that he perpetrated crimes of opportunity rather than passion.

Moreover, it's quite dismaying to read some of the comments on Twitter. You see plenty of people blaming the cops, Jeffrey's parents, and society as a whole on Dahmer's actions but the cops are the ones who are irredeemably corrupt and the true villains, not even Dahmer himself.

The irony of course is that the series revels in Jeffrey's crimes by showing them in graphic detail. It implies that Lionel was wrong to try to write a book even though the media sensationalized and made up details about his life, but making a show about a serial killer without even notifying or offering to compensate Jeffrey Dahmer's victims is all well and good because you check those boxes. Woke hypocrisy at its finest.

reply

Wait, Glenda wasn't even a real person?! WTF?! She's like the main character for like half the damn series and it was all a lie? Wow, that's disgusting.

reply

Composite characters are a common creator of crime stories based on true events. It's not a damn documentary.

reply

Odd that the Not Woke Shows site has this listed as a non-woke show: https://www.notwokeshows.com/show/Dahmer

reply

They have a "Oops is this woke?" button right below the cover.
So basically they put up a bunch of shows and it's up to the visitors to report the woke shows.

reply

Report it then. They don't put up just any show/movie people submit, they review them first.

reply

I clicked the button.
The options which they give you suggests that they don't even know what wokeness even is.

What a crap site. Looks like it was made by a greedy loser who is trying to profit from the current anti-woke sentiments.

reply

What is wokeness in your view?

reply

A plague on mankind.

reply

Ok but what is it?

reply

According to themselves: "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".

According to me: black nationalists and other identity extremists with victim complex, who are looking for ways to dethrone, disempower and demonize their racial/sexual enemies.

Anyway, the site has removed this show since I reported it.
