Debuted today - This movie is very original and well done. 5/5

Actor Mahershala Ali seems to have a knack for picking interesting non-trivial roles. Swan Song is about a man who is dying who finds a company that will surreptitiously insert a healthy clone of himself into his life and his experiences, feelings and reactions as he goes through this process.

I've seen nothing like this, and it is extremely well done and believable ... assuming you do a little suspension of disbelief. That is all I have to say about it to avoid spoilers, but I'd rate it 5/5.

Swan Song, debuted Friday December 17, 2021 on AppleTV.

I liked the acting. They should have done more with the plot. 6.5/10

Watched it today and that was my thought too. The premise is intriguing, it's well directed, the production design is great, and the performances are inspired. But the screenplay? Nah. This movie could have been so much more. It's a pity.

I think it if aimed any higher it would confuse people not as smart as you and me.

Damn. Another apple movie. I love Ali and Harris too. *snaps*

I loved their chocolate bar "meet cute". That was so original and funny.

Ali really intrigues me, because being a black man he has to pretty much play black roles, but ( and I hope this is not misconstrued ) he selects the roles and plays the roles in such a way that you don't really see that the movie is making a point about him being black - even when he was obviously black, and it was about being black, in "Green Book", it was more about crushing isolation and loneliness.

He is pretty much at the top of my actor to watch list because he has a 100% history and shows a ton of integrity. I just hope he doesn't start playing Superheroes or in Zombie movies ... though I bet if he did he'd find one that was unique.

The Asian woman, Awkwafina, I Don't recall seeing her in anything before, but she knocks that small part out of the park.

Even Glen Close has just the right vibe to play the doctor.

reply

Awkwafina was in Shang-Chi and Jumanji 2.

Well, he's kind of playing Blade..., and he did play Cottonmouth in Luke Cage S1 (he was great though. I absolutely loved how he played his character through the narrative arc in that season. Fantastic, multidimensional villain. (Too bad the other one wasn't.))

And so far from what I've seen, I have to agree. Even when True Detective S3 touched upon issues of raciality, it never felt forced; it just felt like it was just another aspect of an already multi-layered character there.

reply

I guess you haven't heard that he'll be playing Blade in the New Marvel Movie. I hope he does it justice.

reply

Not gonna be watching anything more from what's'is'name.

the premise is exactly like "Tom" in the Solos series. it's more one on one but the same. you might like that series if you haven't seen it. this one was good as well but it brought me right back to the Solos series.
