The Irishman was not a masterpiece, De Niro and Pacino were miscast

De Niro's and Pacino's old age ruined any chance The Irishman had of being a masterpiece. The real Jimmy Hoffa looked and acted nothing like Pacino's portrayal and with De Niro's role, he just looked too old and short to be convincing as Frank Sheeran, especially De Niro's very unconvincing and laughable grocery store clerk beat up scene. Both actors also have very strong Italian features (face and voice) and were not suitable for the parts they portrayed. The lousy de-aging cgi was a huge mistake and makes the movie unwatchable on repeat viewing. I will admit that Scorsese made the perfect choice for casting Joe Pesci as Russ Bufalino. Pesci was performance was excellent.

Goodfellas and Casino were masterpieces.

I fully agree.
Their age hurt too many scenes too much. The grocery store "beat up" scene will forever be branded into my brain in the "most cringy movie scenes" department.
It was... so difficult to watch how this old man tried to beat up that store owner for touching his daughter... oh God I see the "imma step on ya hand real hard!" moment right before me! Make it stop!

Yeah, I agree. Pacino had a noticeable old man slouch at times and De Niro did not have the energy of a middle aged man. Kendricks is right about that scene where he (gently) beats up the shop keeper.

Also, both of them seemed to fall back into their classic acting tics, particularly De Niro. You know how every De Niro impressionist does that 'shoulder shrug, squint eyes, tilt head and smirk' thing? It was everywhere in this movie.

Pacino was back into his growly 'hoo hah' thing circa the mid-90s.

Pesci was fine I thought.

Movie really was too long also... it could easily have been done in two hours. Sometimes less is more.

I thought De Niro was good. Pacino, I agree. He moved and talked like an old man. I could have overlooked this if he had given a great performance but for me it was just his same old shouty-schtick.

A pretty good film, though - much more absorbing than I expected and Scorsese’s best in some time.

Al Pacino was completely miscast. He sounded and acted like Al Pacino, as in most of his films.

You could argue that De Niro was maybe not the right choice, but Pacino was amazing in this. Totally robbed of the oscar.

I'll give you Pacino (complete with his overacting) but let's not forget that De Niro himself is part Irish. My grandfather is also part Irish and looks just like an elderly De Niro (complete with the gestures). Whenever I saw him muttering on screen I'd yell out "Abuelo!" 😁
