Clay's "Useless Man" Speech

Clay was old enough (50s) that he obviously grew up in a pre-Internet, smart phone era, so it surprised me that he didn't seem to have any sense of how to navigate the world without tech. I'd expect that from a Millennial or Gen Z character, but not a Gen X character.

reply

This is a woke thing. He was written as a sloppy man and his wife to be the head of the family. There is no need to ponder about it.

reply

Fair assessment.

It's a tired stereotype that I rarely see in reality among dedicated fathers.

reply

I mean, they wrote it this way to get certain check marks from Netflix and it is irritating. There is nothing wrong with these family relations, especially considering that I'm a goofy millennial myself.

reply

you think all men are "alphas"?

reply

Not every man is an alpha, but every 40+ father I've met knows basic things like directional skills. And no father I've known would leave a woman by the side of the road. They wrote an unbelievably weak character.

reply

lol, you think every men would put up with a woman acting crazy? really?

reply

LOL. You are naive or live in echo chamber. That was very realistic character.

reply

No man I know would leave a distressed woman by the side of the road. But, hey, maybe you hang with a different crowd.

reply

Call me up when you will be in apocalypse. Lost. Not knowing what happened. Scared. And your family would be in house with weird strangers. And some people would jump at your care and demand you to do something for them or go somewhere, all while shouting in language you don't know.

But honestly I'm open to hear your personal approach in this situation. So you sit there in a car and what do you do?

- Sit for hours in a car on a road and listen to her rantings?

- Grab her by force and put in car and wheel to your house? So that she would think you are some maniac and attack you for kidnapping?

- Go with any random people that jump you at the road into random spooky house they will tell you to come? "To help them"? That's how horror movies do.

I was honestly surprised she did not point direction and tell Husband to go somewhere. And that people didn't jump from the bushes to take his car. Because this is usually how it happens during apocalypse. White Saviors with their moral complex and desire to help everyone - go out first when people ambush them and take their car and steal their food. And usually beat them up and kill.

Joel in Last of Us knew it all too well when he told Ellie to not stop and drive when some weirdo guy approached them and beg for help. And it was an ambush.

reply

She was sobbing and asking for a ride. All the men I know would have opened the door for her, driven back to the house, and then tried to work out some kind of communication. Had it been a man, I can understand being extra cautious, but most men are raised to help women, not abandon them.

reply

She was not asking for a ride. LOL. Where did she ask to go? To ahora pahora meputa?

Did you see her trying to open door and pointing?

What house? She was standing there and yelling at him. And when he told her he can't understand - she ignored him and keep yelling. Probably thinking that if she keeps yelling long enough he will understand.

You don't go out in real world much and don't have family I assume? Real world is not a Lord of the rings fairy tale, hon. In real world people get robbed, killed, ambushed. And during apocalypse this is the first thing bad guys do. They send child, helpless looking woman or man and ask car to stop and then to go "somewhere". Then they robe that stupid white savior idiot and take his car, food and sometimes life. You trust absolutely no one during apocalypse. Or you and your family end up dead.

That dude had his family waiting for him to come back. And he was already half lost. He is not gonna go to somewhere with some yelling woman he stumbled upon the road. During stress situations people in general dont like those who panic and yell and try run away from them.

And its obviously SHE would not come with him to the woods. She would start yelling in the car DEMANDING him to go to whatever she wants. And it's aint his business to babysit grown hysterical women. He has his own business and family to take care of.

But it would be hilarious if he would bring her back and she would ran around house hysterically screaming at everyone.

reply

I'd help a woman in distress. But, like I said before, you must run with a different crowd. You seem to be afraid of a lot of stuff.

reply

Sure Jen. What ever you say.

reply

Dude, this is how things happen in real life often. There are lots and lots of families in the world where husband is sloppy and wife is in charge of family. Sloppy and weak man usually gravitate to stronger women who will boss them around and make important decisions. As they themselves don't really like to do that. and if they will find such sloppy weak woman then those two would have it hard making in life. As both of them would be unable to boss around and do something.

reply

He was a scholar so it was believable that he didn't know how to handle some daily tasks.

reply

It's not about tech or skills. When you come to unknown place and there are constant turns - everyone would get lost after few corners. People were not superhumans with amazing memory back then. They kept relying on maps and obsessivly read sighs with names of towns and streets.

I'm surprised he could actually get back. I would be lost. It was kind of stupid from him to go out like that. He could be easily lost and not able to come back.

reply

I didn't think any of the characters were believable (or likable).
And leaving the woman at the side of the road, was especially unbelievable. She only speaks Spanish, and he only speaks English, and neither one is trying to communicate with the other.

reply

But she was the one who came to his country and refused to learn a single word. It was her responsibility to have offline google translate downloaded to her phone or book dictionary. This is literally what I do when I come as tourist to another country. Because I don't want to be in situation when I don't understand something in local language.

People like her are super ignorant and disrespect. And she payed price for that.
