- Those 4 penalties are two more than the next highest team which is 2.

- Argentina has had 0 penalties given against them.

- One penalty Messi scored was given despite an obvious encroachment of one of his players running into the box. No VAR check.

- Argentina was given a controversial penalty where the foul was possibly outside the box.

- The referee for Argentina vs. Netherlands was sent home. He was the only referee this tournament that Messi criticized and the only one to be sent home.

- Messi has not been fined for criticizing the referee.

- The President of PSG (who Messi plays for) is also the chairman of Qatar Sports Investments.

- For the Portugal game against Morocco, FIFA scheduled 5 Argentine players to officiate the match. (the referee, both linesmen, and 2 in the VAR room) That's 5 of 8 people. This was Ronaldo's last World Cup tournament and the game that kicked him out.

- Of the top 10 players with the most goals so far, only 1 player has scored a penalty. That player is Messi and he scored 3 of them.

- Messi was not awarded a yellow card for a blatant hand ball. He later got a yellow for another infraction. He would have been sent off if given that first yellow.
