So is the astronaut in the opening J.J. Jameson's son?

I felt like the filmmakers were making a nod to Venom's origin in Spider-Man: TAS, where Jameson's son inadvertently brings back the symbiote from a space mission. The movie and the Venom saga from TAS even end in a similar way, with the launch of a spacecraft.

It is according to a couple of websites. I myself don’t have any reason to doubt it.

After all, Avi Arad, one of Venom’s producer (and someone not many Spider-Man fans are fond of) was a producer on Spider-Man: TAS. So, yeah, how could this be seen as anything other than a nod to the classic animated series?

Pretty cool.

I thought that too.

Yes. That's how they should've done it in Spider-Man 3 too since they had already set up his son as an astronaut. Then they could've brought Dr. Conors in, and have that be Spider-Man's first connection to the symbiote. Totally a missed opportunity there.

Having the symbiote's first random encounter being Spider-Man, arguably the strongest human in the state, was too much of a coincidence. It makes more sense for it to first contact one of the millions of "regular" hosts before it ever meets Spidey and grows a liking to him.

I'm not completely satisfied with the story here, but it's so much better than what we got in Spidey 3 that I have to give it a pass.
