Interracial Romance?

I'm curious... it's really not often that in an American film an Asian man is sexualized. It's even LESS often that you'll see an interracial relationship involving an Asian man... RARER STILL is a Black lady and an Asian man. Unlike that cock-tease Romeo Must Die where they never even kissed D:<

So I'm wondering if Rain and Naomie are to be pared off in this one... Seems likely. I'm all for bold casting choices and Naomie Harris is pretty cool. So I'm all for this movie being awesome!

Go Rain! <3

I think its kinda odd how interracial relationships are accepted but still taboo. I mean in reality I see lots of interracial relationships but it seems in film and tv it's incredibly rare. Almost like we are being told that same race relationships is the proper and accepted norm. The film industry likes to "break racial" barriers by producing films dealing with the topic of racisim (usually from whites towards blacks) or even casting an actor that happens to be of a different race then the already established character ( eg. will smith playing jim west) but yet they just dont want to pair an asian man with a black women (unless its in some comedic fashion)
on a related topic what I find intresting is how America has overcome racism. after all we did elect a black president right isnt that proof. doing so has been described as a mile stone. so answear me this. Would america elect a Jew? what about an asian or a hespanic? If we have come so far from the racism that plauged our past why is a member of the United states military (whom I personaly know)always profiled at airports because he happens to be of arabic decent? Why was such a big deal made about Obama's obscure possible conection to islam?
Our society hasnt moved passed the close mindedness of racisim we mearly changed the color that is acceptible for us to hate. To me that does not mean we have made progress.

The way I see it is, studio make what people want to see, and what their target demography are willing to pay money to see. Reality and fairness be damned.

If the studio can get away with *beep* over Asian/Native/Arab people (and sometimes Black people as well), they will do it. Black people made strides in terms of media representation, but even then they are often stereotyped. The other minorities are treated even worse.

This is why you almost never see Asian male in any romantic situation, why despite the fact that Black male/white female is one of the largest IR, it rarely appears on screen, and same reason why when there is IR involved, it is almost always a white man with a woman of different race (usually an Asian female).

So to quote "I think its kinda odd how interracial relationships are accepted but still taboo"

I would say, certain aspect of IR that benefits the dominate majority (aka white male) are very much accepted, while IR that would make the major demography uncomfortable (regardless of reality) are often avoided.

you sound like you're definitely not a racist, but you're obviously not exposed to a lot of black people (at least not to the majority of black people in America who still live below the poverty line). America is a long way from having "overcome racism"). There is hope, however. Once my generation (over 50) of black people that have experienced (and still do experience) racism have died off; and those old Republicans who actually thought just SAYING "remember, we're Abraham Lincoln's party" would get them the black vote (cause we're all stupid), once those old folks die off - THEN racism won't be as big an issue as it has been.

President Obama's election was accomplished by young people. Yay, you guys!

Hollywood, would never ever have that. They think Americans aren't ready, but I would love to see it. I'm black and I find asian dudes attractive!

It is a total double standard. You see white dude's with hispanic and asian chicks all the time in the movies and TV, but rarely a White guy with a black chick or asian guy with anything other than an asian girl.

Hollywood is like 50 years behind real society. It's like they say that hollywood is this liberal Mecca but in reality they are all a bunch of scared hypocrites pandering to conservative america.

In Rumble in the Bronx, Jackie Chan's uncle married a black woman. It was heart warming. Nevermind the fact she was fat and rather unattractive.

...Ok I realize I'm not really helping here. Sorry, I got nothing, that's all I could come up with.

All kidding aside, name one American made movie where an Asian lead gets an Asian girl.

yeah, the filmakers aren't going to give anything significant away. The interracial romance is still a possibility.

I'd hit it!

Basically, I'm replying to all the threads until that "hate" thread disappears.

Because most hollywood films that involve Asians with WHite characters follow the classic "White man's burden" idea. It is the White man that deserves the spoils. That means all the hot sexualised women. Asian men are all computer programmers and ruthless business men. They have small ****s and can't have the White woman.

That is essentially the common attitude in Hollywood films. White man goes to Asia and all Asian women are madly desiring him. Asian man goes to America and White women think of his as their asexual friend.

Films should (racial) 'break' taboos, if they are there. Any controversy just helps the film! But we don't really know unless films delve into it, can we? So yeah, for example, get Chow Yun Fat, give him a decent goddamn script and have him do a drama with a woman from another race. Any audience protest will just show any underlying racism in the public, which is always good to know, means anti-racism groups have something productive to do.

I think Hollywood is being run by idiots, not racists.

Then we might reverse the question: How many Asian movies portray white men as "hunks"? White guys are most often portrayed as villains in Asian movies... "

How many Asian countries constantly tout themselves as a paragon of colorblind ethnic diversity?

Hollywood is not ready for interracial romance between an asian guy and woman of another race. In the trailer, you do see Rain kissing another asian woman though.

reply

I guess he is not Rain but the young Raizo.

reply

that sucks. Rain is hot. Megan Fox can't seem to get over him.

Wait I'm confused! so Rain Oppa doesn't hook up with Naomi??

It's not Hollywood who is not ready for an interracial romance between Asian men and women of other races. It's the movie going public. Hollywood just sells them what they want to see. If this was an independent film, people might accept Asian men and women of other races in relationships. Most people don't realize that we believe a lot in stereotypes. Stereotypes keep us in our place. I think that they are good looking Asian men, Tony Jaa is good looking to me. He has a very beautiful body, lean like a dancer.

reply

Hollywood will never evolve every five years they get a new crop of actors and actresses and they start over making the same stuff. It's up to writers, directors and casting agencies to push this along.
--IA Tony is luv, I'm attracted to many Asian men. Bi Rain being one, the few that have made a splash in movies and tv shows but go deep with dramas you will be blown away.

This is true unfortunately. Back in the 60s, Hollywood tried to build a Japanese Asian heartthrob and in 2 films paired him with hot young blonde women but I guess, American audiences weren't ready for that yet. His name is James Shigeta btw and he was hot and a good and charismatic actor!

reply

Haha, Romeo must die was some racist *beep* I was so pissed. But did you know in the final scene they actually DID kiss?, but test screening audiences didn't like it, so they took it out.
I'm not surprised as they basically made Jet Li an asexual loser, while his younger brother was getting a lap dance by two lesbians asian ho's! and he is later killled by being hanged on a flagpole!

reply

[deleted]

Oh, I agree that was disgusting. And his wife had such a beautiful nature air about her (Carla Gugino, great performance). Jet Li should have been fawning over her. Instead, nothing. Pathetic.

reply

AMBF is taboo? to whom?

It seemed like:

White Women with any non-white Men - taboo.
Black Men with any non-black girl - taboo.
Asian Men who even look remotely sexual - taboo.

White Men with any kind of girl - not a taboo!

Looks like a lot of these taboo are written by white men. I wonder what are they afraid of? I, for one, do not like my entertainment option limited by the insecurities of a particular race of people.

As for Jet Li - Even though he's a Ma ability is legendary, the guy is a very conservative Buddhist. He dislike display of sexuality in movies in general, much less being the Romantic Lead with sex scene. Check out all his HK films and try to find one scene where he kisses anyone. He's the not the guy to break stereotype - he's reinforcing it. We need someone like Bruce Lee again - he even married a white girl in real life. I think RAIN is trying hard to be the modern Bruce Less - not in term of MA ability, but how Bruce breaks Stereotypes. The last gen of Asian MA stars wasn't too effective - Jet Li's too conservative, and Jackie Chan is too much of a comic relief. Chow Yun Fat was ruined by Hollywood racist machine (Really? Master Roshi? Really?). It's up the new gen to continue the good fight.

As for John Cho - I love the guy. He's really a pioneer and his efforts will open doors for a lot of young Asian-American actors. I love the fact that he didn't start off doing MA stuff, but actually a stone movie. I rarely watch maintream TV anymore but I'll catch anything with John in it - and he's practically carrying Flash Forward - all other actors are just bad or boring.
