Interracial Romance?

I'm curious... it's really not often that in an American film an Asian man is sexualized. It's even LESS often that you'll see an interracial relationship involving an Asian man... RARER STILL is a Black lady and an Asian man. Unlike that cock-tease Romeo Must Die where they never even kissed D:<

So I'm wondering if Rain and Naomie are to be pared off in this one... Seems likely. I'm all for bold casting choices and Naomie Harris is pretty cool. So I'm all for this movie being awesome!

ALSO

Go Rain! <3

reply

i really hope they do get paired off because i love asian men and im mixed with black and puerto rican. ive always been attracted to asian boys since i was young and always got made fun of for it. the only other movie i can think of that has a asian and a black romance is Cinderella with Brandy.

reply

Romeo Must Die

No fvcking sh!t lady. Do I sound like I'm ordering a pizza??!!??

reply

I heard from "The Slanted Screen" that the production company really wanted to avoid alot of sexual overtones in that movie.

"He's the one... he can do it."- Ray Charles on Jamie Foxx playing him

reply

For all you looking for an interracial romance between an asian guy and a black girl, watch the new ABC series Flash Forward in september. They're gonna have a romance between John Cho and Gabrielle Union,

reply

If you are talking about Romeo Must Die, from what I remember of the Slanted Screen is that they screened it with an "Urban" audience who really voted against the final screen kiss.

reply

Omg I was soooooo in love with the Prince in that *sighs* lol.

What's more dangerous than sincere ignorance?

reply

I d rather expect from hollywood that they show how a kindergarden full of children is butchered, than a good looking asian man who is in a healthy romantic relationship with a non asian woman.

reply

Another movie with an AM/BW relationship is "Akira's Hip-Hop Shop" it's an independant film though *sigh*. I see both the public and film industry as the problem.

ey guys!
this is from the Wachowskis!! what did you expect?
they had their lesbians in Bound!
their BDSM people in the Matrix!
pedophilic, BDSM, gay and even fetish (kiss between V and Evey) in V for Vendetta!
asexuality in Speed Racer!
and here... you will see the interracial!

typical for the Wachwoskis. typical Matrix... a endless variation of everything.

Source: Official Comic-Con interview posted like in 2008 or something. You can find it if you look hard enough I suppose, but I'm betting Warner Bros. had the video taken down because of all the spoilers that Naomi released during that particular interview.

...this is probably the interview you are talking about.

...sucks..maybe in a sequel like she says or maybe they added at least something.

there is a AMBF relationship on the pilot for the show VIRTUALITY. in fact the fist time we see them they are kissing and the captain has to tell them to get all their clothes when they have sex all over the ship since her thongs where found in the garden. and each time you see them they dont hide it. the actress is Joy Bryant and I dont now the guys name. but your right when i saw it i was shocked also. pleased but shocked

reply

they should definitely f--k in this movie. and there should be more yellow jungle fever in general.

asian + black = tiger woods, hines ward

its like creating a super race.

reply

Lol but still tiger was created via AW/BM not BW/AM

Haha. You just put "Hollywood" and "healthy romantic relationship" in the same sentence.. Hollywood = very sexualised and usually not very healthy.

In reply to OP. Who really cares? This is shaping up to be an extremely cool movie with ninjas. Lots of ninjas. I'm not going to the cinema (assuming Aus cinemas actually show it..) to watch ppls kiss/fk/etc. I'm going to watch ninjas throw shurikens, use swords, martial arts and generally look awesome. And I'm generally not the only one with that opinion. =P

Teen girls go to cinemas to watch couples get together. This isn't (generally speaking) a teen girl movie so expecting a deep romantic plot is kinda going to ruin it for you..

Well as far as interracial relationships we had one in NCIS with a Korean agent and a white lab assistant. That went on for quite a while. There was Hiro's (Japanese) little love for the waitress (white) in Heroes, until she died. Also on Heroes we had a Hispanic male in love with an black female. There's not enough interracial love connections that's true for most of hollywood. But if you look at Asian cinema its self they always go for the chaste 7 times out of 10 in their dramas too.

reply

It is not the depiction of interracial relationship, it is who are involved. For example, the white men/Asian women one is fairly common and not all that ground breaking (in fact some might even say it is overdone and turning into its own stereotype).

The Asian men/black women is extremely rare, hence the reaction.

No I think he's just REALLY REALLY modest and married. Its a shame Jet Li set such an asexual precedence for asian action stars. Jean Claude Van Damme in contrast practically slept with a woman in all his movies.

reply

Yeah, Rains fanbase is still in Korea. He has to keep them happy and Korea is one of the most racist conservative cultures on Earth. When interracial couples have babies they must move to a western country because their children will be beat up in school. Any Korean woman that dates foreigners is stigmatized as a whore. I get constant angry stares when I walk around with my Korean lady friends. And I have experienced first hand the angry parents yelling at their daughters or sons for dating outside the Korean "blood".

reply

LOL. Whatever, that's totally changing. My boyfriend is Korean and his parents accept me, even though I'm white. Yeah, there is still some stigma, but it's not as bad as that, I've never seen any Korean girl yelled at or being called a whore for dating a white guy and I lived in Korea. The younger generation is still a little ignorant, but not as racist or conservative at all.

reply

we're talking about interracial love between asians and blacks, stupid bitch. so shut up about your korean boyfriend because a white person dating an asian is like... NOT A BIG DEAL!!!!!!!

but when a couple involves a black person then it matters!!!

reply

look at his post history and profile. He's clearly a Japanese dude pretending to be white female.

I've been reading a lot of the messages for this subject. I do believe that Hollywood is afraid of depicting interracial relationships. AM with BF is one example. However, the right people need to be coupled together in order for it to be believeable/romantic. A lot of people mention "Romeo Must Die" as a missed opportunity, but Jet Li seems to be pretty stiff with the leading ladies in his films. And I'm including his HK films. He usually seems uncomfortable and frigid. On the other hand, Chow Yun Fat seems to be relaxed, confident, and charming. I think he's only kissed one of his American leading ladies, and that I think was Jodie Foster in "Anna and the King." John Cho (Star Trek)I believe would do fairly well in an onscreen IR relationship. The Asian guy from the movie "Elecktra" too. I can't think of his name right now. In fact, he was depicted in an IR relationship with a black female in a Lil Jon video. Hollywood just needs to find the right actors and stop being scared.

reply

Just so you know, John Cho is currently on flashforward, and his fiance is black (she's played by Gabrielle Union)

reply

The Asian lead in Boarding Gate F'ed Asia Argento in the movie.
I don't care too much about Jet Li. He seems naturally humble to where I wouldn't believe if he got the girl. This Rain guy seems pretty cool, violent, destructive; he seems to have a mans appetite for having sex with women.

That was very surprising.

They showed scenes of them kissing.
He got to touch her hair.

Then most shocking of all was the bedroom scene. They actually kept the scene in.

Apologies, it was a scene in Flashforward. John Cho's character is involved with Gabrielle Union's character.

From reading the racialicious blog, many were pleased with the relationship. Apparently there is some sort of belief that Black women do not like to have their hair touched.

If you want to see an asian guy with a black girl on TV, check out that one show where everyone fell asleep and saw their futures. The asian guy from the Harold and Kumar movies is dating Gabrielle Union or w/e her name is on that show. They even had a sex scene already.

Thanks, I'm already watching the series.

The racialicious blog readers have found the relationship very well written. Something along the lines of showing him touching her hair was good for black women as they seem to have the stereotype of black women not linking their hair to be touched.

At least, there's one relationship between one Oriental Asian and a Black woman I can point towards. Thought I was the only one breaking the stereotype...lol

Yes, np. I have a black female friend who only dates asian men.

I think that belief of "Black women that do not like to have their hair touched" .. is soo ridiculous....

I think it's more personal to a Black woman... I just saw Chris Rock's new movie.. "Good Hair".. explains that whole theory perfectly.. along with being totally hilarious.. it was a mixture or Rock and Dave Chappele comedy... but put a high beam on the extremes that black women go through to try to live up to societies view of beauty.

-but I digress.. AM & BF.. is a GOOOO!.. Final Answer!!

reply

Just got the DVD of "Good Hair". Looking forward to watching...lol

OMG

Please don't take that movie as a fact for all (or even most) Black women. As a bw, that "mokumentary" is a disgrace to all bw and i am ashamed of Chris Rock for making it. He makes me sick and he has a twisted little mind!

HORRIBLE documentary!!

Um, so are you denying that most black women don't straighten their hair (either by perm or flat iron)? How is that a mockumentary?

Granted, I haven't seen it, but you're kidding yourself if you don't think the documentary is not truthful.

reply

black women perm or straighten their hair because it helps them to assimilate into the American workforce.

asian women put tape over their eyelids or quietly have surgery to give them a fold over their eyelid because they want to look like white people/have larger eyes. Or what they call "the fold". Even Rain himself said that he was rejected and told he was ugly because he did not have the fold over his eyes.

white women wear foundation, weave, tan/darken/bronze their skin, get lip/collagen injections/breast implants/face lifts/ and other plastic surgeries to enhance their appearance. Hair color is especially important in America; you really need to be blonde to be a successful entertainer.

I cannot think of anything specific for latina women but i'm sure they're doing something to alter their appearance too. If not, well it's becasue latin men are wholly satisfied with their appearance.

women of every culture alter their appearance in some way to make themselves more appealing. people make a big deal/conspiracy/or stigmatize everything black women do because of skewered perceptions about race.

reply

The Asian guy from the movie "Elecktra" too. I can't think of his name right now. In fact, he was depicted in an IR relationship with a black female in a Lil Jon video.
The guy's name is Will Yun Lee. He is paired with a black woman in the movie Torque. He's paired with Christina Milian, another black latina, like Zoe Saldana. Will Yun Lee and Christina Milian's characters are sexually involved and they stay together in the end.

well if people like AM/BW romances, google the book disappear, love.

I watched this movie w/ a friend and at the scene where Mika leans in to kiss Rain, she yelled, "Oh hell no!".. but it turned out she only kissed him on the cheek.

I asked about it after the movie and she goes, "She can get her OWN man, okay?"

... I know that sounds uber-racist, but... it was actually really funny when she said it. I guess you had to be there. She looked very impassioned.

But anyway, what I'm telling you is, a million Asian Rain fangirls probably would have shat their pants.

reply

I don't understand your friend's reaction. Naomie Harris is almost the same color as Rain.

reply

His/Her friend made an ignorant ass statement. I hope she was just joking.

reply

The directors may have thought that they would be offending their Asian audiences with a "romance". The kiss between Raizo and Kiriko was tame as was the kiss that Mika gave Raizo.

reply

[deleted]

You guys are mistaken if you think asian people are offended by kissing and sex scenes, especially any involving korean actors. The wildest most erotic, most pornographic mainstream movies I have seen -- hands down beating out american and western movies are KOREAN movies. Watch the movies Sweet Sex and Love as well as Green Chair. My mouth hit the floor -- I watch them on netflix and could not believe , I honestly still secretly believe that these actors were doing it for real. Trust me, they probably laughed at that tame little kiss, you are right about that.
