Why did Howard shave beard just after killing someone ?

Why Howard has shaved his beard just after killing Emmet when we see his body still in acid later. What is so hurry or care to shave at that time, he could have done it any time early before killing happened or later any time. Who goes to shave after killing someone? What's director was implying with this?

reply

Because Emmett was gone. And he could now be alone with Michelle and woo her and control her and she had no other means of protection / companionship. As a woman, his cleaned up appearance was the scariest and most threatening part of the entire movie for me. If she was not welcoming of his advances, it was pretty clearly implied to me that he would force himself upon her. Howard always takes control and gets his way. Creeped me out to no end.

Yeah, and some posters on this board this board still had the nerve to say that he was the good guy even after that---give me a break.

Maybe but remember if that's what he wanted he could have done that any time from the start when she was unconscious and we saw he had the injection to make her unconscious anytime he wanted.

I still think it was more a replacement for the daughter he lost (or was taken from him) type of thing.

You can really say anything you want. He wanted to clean himself of the murder he just committed. He wanted to appeal to her by shaving and dressing nice? He is a clean freak and weird person that wanted to use the acid to clean up his facial hairs? I mean who knows.

It's to imply that, after Emmet's death, he finally felt comfortable about bringing up the suggestion to "repopulate the earth".

he shaves and cleans up, and it's just the two of them. this is to make us imagine what we wants and might do to her he seems to be trying to impress her, and help justify her actions against him. He's not a well man....we're left to imagine his next move as she plots hers.

I was freaked out about that too. I believe he did that because he felt he could finally re-create his life exactly in his vision. He's also a military man so being clean shaven is how an upstanding man ought to look aside from a mustache. So since he was ostensibly miserable when Emmet was still around, it's natural that he wouldn't be in the mood to dress up since to him Emmet is ruining his plans and he's not in total control despite how domineering he is.

He did have a moral compass in the regard since he could have killed him at any point, but to Howard, he wasnt doing anything wrong. If Emmet was telling the truth, he would be putting everyone's life in jeopardy because he's stupid and at the very least expose everyone to the radiation in his/their escape. Putting his "daughter" at "risk" is simply unacceptable even though Emmet was obviously lying and that was enough to make a moral decision in order to protect him and his daughter.

maybe its to show the two faced "true face" of Emmet

reply

He wanted to look better like most guys do when they dig a chick. Pretty easy to grasp.

A new beginning. Clean slate. He thinks it wipes his acts away and makes him look better to Michelle. I had the closed captions on - something I do more and more because some dialogue is just so mumbly anymore - and the stuff he was saying to her was like, "It's ok. It's over. It's just the two of us now."
