shareWhat do YOU think he found?
The answer to your Q was left up to the viewer. For a lot of viewers, it was Katherine. My problem is why the father opened the trunk anyway. David said she was gone, he did not say she was in the trunk. This was a big leap in logic.

David drove his car over there... Then he left on foot, leaving his car behind. No leap in logic there - that's a pretty big clue for the dad any way you look at it.
shareYeah, that was a big leap. Still, there was reason to open the trunk, since David had walked away and left his car there, after saying, "I'm like you now." A cryptic comment, to say the least. The Dad became suspicious, probably, since he knew David was weird and had psychological problems, and Katie was suddenly "gone," and David wouldn't explain that.
My problem is...trunks don't usually automatically open. They lock.
My problem is...trunks don't usually automatically open. They lock.Actually, cars of that period often had a button on the trunk with a lock on the button. You could leave the trunk unlocked so that pushing the button would open the trunk without the key.
That type of Mercedes has a push button type trunk. It can be locked with a key or able to be opened by pushing it.
shareI would say his dead wife.
shareimplied it was the wife..
