No, the new filmmakers, like this iteration of Ghostface, decided that one of the legacy characters had to go, to show there were stakes.

And I think they wanted a gurrrrll power moment at the end. Neve Campbell, Sam, Jenna Ortega, Courtney Cox = 4 women survivors
